Reconsidering U.S. policy

My column last week, "Consider Peace, Not War," inspired several incredulous students to e-mail to ask how could I take such a position. Indeed, the questions were tough: what is the United States supposed to do after the Sept. 11 hijackings? Isn't Osama bin Laden supporting the oppression of other Muslims by helping prop up the Taliban regime in Afghanistan? How can we abandon Israel, the only Middle Eastern country with some semblance of a democracy, even if you are right that it is only for Israeli Jews?

Bringing home the bucket

Finally. At last, an IU football team won a game without having to score 40 points. Without having to gain 500-plus yards. Without trading touchdowns and hoping to score the final one. IU beat Purdue 13-7 Saturday because of defense. Finally. "It feels so great to be a defensive player on this team right now," junior safety Joe Gonzalez said. "The offense has bailed us out a lot of times. They've put a lot of points on the board. The offense shouldn't have to do that.

Hoosiers defeat Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS -- Practice can pay off. Just ask the women's soccer team. The Hoosiers spent the last half hour of practice Monday preparing for a scoring situation identical to the one that presented itself in the second half of yesterday's game against Butler at Kuntz Field in Indianapolis. The end result was sophomore Carly Everett hitting a set kick toward the goal on the right side to junior midfielder, and Butler transfer, Kara Bryan. Bryan deflected the ball to sophomore Emily Hotz, who scored the game's only goal as Indiana downed the Bulldogs 1-0.

Morris tapped for U.N. job

A Hoosier is about to become part of the U.N. IU board of trustees President James T. Morris shared a piece of the international spotlight Tuesday as the United Nations announced its plan to make him executive director of the World Food Program. The announcement came after recent speculation that Morris would be ousted from the position by Australian Bruce Davis.

10th place finish ends season

The men's golf team entered their last tournament of the season, the Bruce Fossum/Taylor Made Invitational, with the hopes that a solid finish would help propel the team closer to an invitation to the NCAA Tournament.

Council approves new city development

The Bloomington City Council heard two pieces of legislation Wednesday night and had inquiries for petitioners to answer before they take final action. Many had questions regarding one development, proposed by L & M Rentals, some of which they want to be resolved before they take final action.

As showtime approached, students who have remained here for the summer and adults alike filed into the Bluebird, resulting in a packed house. Once the lights dimmed, and the Maytals took the stage, there was an air of anticipation as the opening riffs of that oh-so-familiar reggae groove began.

'A Beautiful Mind' wins four Globes

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- "A Beautiful Mind" was named best drama, and its star, Russell Crowe, won the top dramatic actor trophy as the Golden Globes rewarded stories of love under the duress of madness, despair and illness. "A Beautiful Mind" collected a leading four Globes Sunday night and was followed by triple-winner "Moulin Rouge," which was awarded the Globe for best musical or comedy and earned a best actress honor for Nicole Kidman.

Practice pays off in trials

Phi Delta Theta senior Josh Beatty beat three friends to win the most anticipated heat of the 2001 Little 500 men's individual time trials. He also beat everybody else. Beatty won Wednesday's individual time trials at Bill Armstrong Stadium with a time of 2:29.87. Beatty's heat, which was contested at 7:20 p.m., featured four of the event's top riders.

'Summoner' Powerful but overwhelming

Games in the "Final Fantasy" or "Zelda" series were the basis for which THQ created its flagship PS2 role-playing title, "Summoner."

Bomb hurts 2 cops at Belfast school

BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- A bomb exploded outside the entrance to a Roman Catholic primary school Wednesday as schoolgirls faced shouting, stone-throwing Protestant protesters for a third day. Two police officers were injured in the blast and later treated for shrapnel injuries. A police dog also was hurt. None of the girls were hurt, however, and they continued on to Holy Cross school under heavy police presence.

Theater, drama complex to open

After years of preparation, Herman B Wells and William Metz' vision of a new theater and drama complex is finally complete. William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" is the perfect performance to debut the new venue and display its innovative features. The cast of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" delivered a stellar performance in the Wells-Metz Theatre Saturday. This particular rendition of Shakespeare's 16th-century play included a unique and creative twist. Instead of a 16th-century English town, the characters are placed in America at the turn of the 20th century.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- One by one, the best golfers in the world stepped aside. It was Sunday at the Masters and Tiger Woods was in the lead. "After the front nine, I knew it was all over for me," U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen said. He wasn't alone. Woods won his third green jacket by proving he was far more daunting than a toughened up, redesigned Augusta National. He seized control with an early burst of birdies and watched his rivals crash in a desperate and reckless attempt to catch him. The result was another march into history, with Woods becoming only the third player to win back-to-back titles.

Morgan Deputy dies

MARTINSVILLE -- It long looked like Dan Starnes would make it. But the 46-year-old Morgan County Sheriff's Deputy succumbed Tuesday to complications from a wild shootout at close range in mid-June. An untreatable bacterial infection caused Starnes' condition to deteriorate, and his family decided to take him off life support. After a 27-day struggle, Starnes died in the intensive care unit at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis at 8:14 a.m. Flags hung at half-mast throughout Martinsville Tuesday.
