Pumpkins recycled in 'launch'

Aside from the usual ghosts and chainsaw massacres, this weekend Bloomington residents might want to keep an eye out for flying pumpkins. The Great Bloomington Pumpkin Launch is giving participants the opportunity to test their pumpkin chucking skills Saturday as a way to recycle left-over pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. and the event starts at noon.

'Merry Widow' an escape

For those looking to escape to another time and place, Franz Lehár's "Merry Widow" offers a delightful evening of humor and happiness. It is a simple love story in which the only complication is the stubbornness of some of the characters involved. Nobody dies in this opera, and the resolution is a happy one. Although idealized, it is an escape for the audience to the carefree days of Paris at the turn of the 19th century.

I want to go to Harvard

Dear Harvard, I want to go to your school. I am 22 years old and I'm about to graduate from IU with a degree in communication and culture with a minor in music. I don't play an instrument, yet I still have a degree from one of the finest musical institutions in the world. 4 dead after parking garage collapses

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- The top five stories of a parking garage under construction at a casino collapsed Thursday, sending concrete slabs and metal beams crashing down as workers ran for cover. Four people were killed, about 20 were injured and one was missing, officials said.

California wildfires affect Hoosiers

The Southern California wildfires made their journey to Indiana this weekend not by flame, but by flight. IU student travelers were stuck in airports across the country as smoke and quick-spreading fires raged from San Diego to San Bernardino, Calif. Many planes arriving and departing from area airports were not allowed to continue their flight paths, thus causing air traffic delays in other areas of the country.

Brehm stepping down as chancellor

IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm announced her resignation to accept the role of senior advisor to President Adam Herbert, IU officials said Thursday. Brehm, who is also the University vice president for academic affairs, gave Herbert her resignation Wednesday. Her new position will take effect Jan. 1.
