From demon hordes to sith lords

·

This November, we're living in the midst of exciting times. No, not because basketball's starting and not because of opportunities for America to show its opinion on would-be evil dictators.

Even a blind man can see film's worth

·

Ladies and gentlemen, Jamie Foxx has officially arrived as a dramatic actor. After flirting with the title these past few years in films such as "Any Given Sunday," "Ali" and "Collateral," Foxx has given his most fully-realized performance to date as Ray Charles in the late music great's biopic, "Ray."

Just pray you're on the list

·

IU has a long list of bacchanalian traditions, yearly events that define our semesters: Little 500, one's first battle sinking the Bismark, the Hairy Bear or the simple tailgate. In a sense, they are IU.

Vagina Monologues Suspension

Back to the mean streets

·

"Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" is the newest title in the series of mayhem-inducing, violence-driven games that question moral values.

Darkwave duo hungry for more

·

Rarely does a song stay with you; rarely does a voice linger as if it was your own. For darkwave duo Hungry Lucy, however, the band's eclectic, deeply-rooted Renaissance-style haunts the listener with every breath of sound.

Going to a concert? Don't do this

·

Let me be the first to say that I love concerts. My budget only allows me to make rent, pay my bills and maybe get some groceries every now and then, but if there is a little surplus cash on hand (and there's an act in town worth seeing), I'm the first one willing to see a live show.

Geoffrey Miller

Two bands, two sides, one show

·

A glimpse of the contrast between East Coast and West Coast tunes blew through Bear's Place Friday night, where two bands far from home played back-to-back. With New York natives Asobi Seksu leading off to Los Angeles-based Earlimart, musical style differences ran high.

Ronni Moore

Speeding toward stardom

·

In an unassuming vinyl-sided house on South Jefferson Avenue, the five members of The Driving Force are taking a break from rehearsing to talk to Weekend about a trashy shirt they won from a toy crane at Denny's, the kind of device rigged against all chances of getting a prize.

Ronni Moore

R. Kelly, Jay-Z half-ass newest album

·

It appears Jay-Z's retirement was even shorter than expected. Too bad his latest move to take the helm of Def Jam Records, a collection of poor, outtake-ridden songs written and performed with R. Kelly, hits the ground like a lead balloon.

Danny Glover’s lethal acting does nothing to save “Se7en,” we mean, “Saw.”

Overacting, bad writing sink horror flick

·

This movie is good if you've never seen "Se7en" and you particularly like overacting. Using the shock appeal of showing body parts, murder and all sorts of vileness, this movie just can't pull it off like the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" did.

An introduction to da ruckus

·

It was about 11 years ago that nine New York City rappers put together one of the most consistent, hard-hitting and raw hip-hop albums ever created.

Prisoner Farmers

Life after death, with a twist

·

The first half of Jonathan Glazer's ("Sexy Beast") "Birth" is quite interesting and sets the stage for what could be a fascinating film. The story opens with a long steady shot of a man jogging through Central Park who then unexpectedly drops dead, most likely of a heart attack.

Georgia Perry

Reinventing the 'Dead'

·

With the horror genre of films being nowhere near the popularity that it enjoyed during the 1980s and new ideas running dry, Hollywood has taken to remaking popular horror cinema from foreign countries and old classics.

The Indiana Daily Student

Violence is not the answer

·

I'm not a violent person. Really, I've never hit anyone. Nor have I ever been in a fight. Sure, there was that little scuffle in junior high, but it was really just me getting popped in the stomach.

Science group selects 2 from IU for fellowships

·

Of the elite groups of intelligentsia that exist in the United States, the selective American Association for the Advancement of Science is top tier for scientists to claim fellowship. This year, IU scientists Curt Lively, an evolutionary biologist, and David Williams, an organic chemist, made the cut. Their fellowship nominations bring IU's number of living AAAS fellows up to 42 -- a number higher than any other institution in Indiana. Of these 42, six are biologists and 12 are chemists.

Kelley student takes first at competition

·

On Oct. 22 sophomore Alix Moll, a member of IU's Global Sales Leadership Club, bested over 30 other students to capture the state title at the Midwest Sales Competition held at Ball State University in Muncie. Senior Cameron Gwinn, juniors Jeff Martin and Lauren Hilgeford, and sophomore Allison Baumann also performed well for IU. This is the first time IU has sent students to the competition.

IU Foundation elects new members

·

The IU Foundation announced the election of Gregg Summerville and Kathryn Booth to its 48-member board of directors this week. "One of the Foundation's strengths is its board of dedicated, volunteer directors," said IU Foundation President Curt Simic in a press release by the University.

Youth turn-out in record numbers

·

More young people voted in Tuesday's presidential election than voted in the last election four years ago, but an overall spike in voter turnout among all ages may have skewed the perception that youth turnout was a disappointment compared to past elections.
