East Chicago mayor ordered to stop abusing city money

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. -- A judge has ordered outgoing East Chicago Mayor Robert Pastrick to temporarily stop using city money to pay legal fees to defend himself and other city officials against public corruption allegations. Lake Superior Court Judge William E. Davis signed a preliminary injunction Tuesday, stopping payments until a Dec. 16 hearing on the matter in his court in East Chicago.

Annual artist competition announced The National Society of Arts and Letters of the Bloomington chapter will award more than $15,000 to students in various visual arts, ballet, drama, acting and musical theater. The competition will give at least $1,000 to the top award.

Christian students find faith, friends

Thursday evenings are big nights on campus. At about 8 p.m. every Thursday, students pack into Woodburn 100 for a huge party. Bands and loud music blare through the doors as friends catch up on the week's events since last Thursday. All the while, regulars greet first-timers and welcome them to the main event.

Last week, David Rubinstein, an assistant professor in the Department of Management in the Kelley School of Business, was reading The New York Times when he stumbled upon an article about the Web site.

U.S. troops question Rumsfeld

CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait -- After delivering a pep talk designed to energize troops preparing to head for Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld got a little "talking to" himself from disgruntled soldiers. In his prepared remarks, Rumsfeld urged the troops to discount critics of the war in Iraq and to help "win the test of wills" with the insurgents. Some of soldiers had criticisms of their own.

Administration to blame for football fans' inactivity

I attended IU in the 50s and still have deep feelings for the University. This fall an IU alumnus friend and I boarded a plane from Florida to come see the Hoosiers play Michigan State. What a shock to see that beautiful campus stadium with no fans. Do I blame the fans for the situation? No.

During the past four years, the number of indecency complaints received by the Federal Communications Commission has grown by more than 685 percent. This means we went from fewer than 350 complaints total for the entirety of 2001 for all of the United States to more than 240,000 in 2003.

This is my last IDS opinion column. The previous sentence probably made some people on this campus very happy. I don't know if I'll claim to be pretentious enough to think some people will be saddened by my departure, but I consider myself fortunate every time someone passes me on the street and stops me to tell me how much they like what I have to say. When people recognize me in buses, restaurants and even in the restrooms, I always appreciate the kind words people have for me.

WASHINGTON -- Congress on Wednesday ordered the biggest overhaul of U.S. intelligence in a half-century, replacing a network geared to the Cold War fight against communism with a post-Sept. 11 structure requiring military and civilian spy agencies to work together against terrorists intent on holy war.

PONTIAC, Mich. -- Five Indiana Pacers players and five Detroit Pistons fans were charged Wednesday in one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history -- a melee last month that broke out on the basketball court and spread to the stands.
