I attended IU in the 50s and still have deep feelings for the University. This fall an IU alumnus friend and I boarded a plane from Florida to come see the Hoosiers play Michigan State. What a shock to see that beautiful campus stadium with no fans. Do I blame the fans for the situation? No.\nI blame the administration and athletics department for having such incompetent coaches for so long. Many good coaches have been available that could have been at IU. As a matter of fact, Illinois went right out and got Ron Zook, the former coach of Florida. \nWhere was IU? Probably crying that we don't have the money. \nWith the alumni and enrollment, IU could have made that happen, but they are too backward to get up to speed with the other powers of the Big Ten, and for sure, the SEC, which got (Steve) Spurrier. Wake up, IU, or you will be playing Ball State instead of Penn State.\nIf IU doesn't wake up, the same thing is going to happen to the basketball program. It's embarrassing to see our teams play with so little direction. They are way behind the curve when it comes to knowing how to play the game like the UConn's and North Carolina's. Indiana needs a big-time coach from the eastern part of the country who will get some tough-nosed kids who can learn the game and play it to its highest level. We're not under-achievers because we haven't reached the level where we could achieve yet. Mike (Davis) should see that he isn't getting the job done, and he should tell his employers that he needs to seek other employment. He has had his chance, and we are going down like the football program. When will IU wake up?\nJames T. Riley\nAlumnus
