Big Ten season gets no easier for IU

For the IU men's tennis team, there is little time for rest. Coming off a brutal pre-conference schedule laden with ranked opponents, the Hoosiers begin their Big Ten season with two more ranked teams, as they face No. 3 Illinois and No. 66 Penn State this weekend at the IU Tennis Center.

Trip to NCAAs on the line in Iowa City tourney

This is the time of year that senior Pat DeGain looks forwards to most. The regular season is finished -- a success by all accounts. He was just the third Hoosier ever to take first at the Midlands Championships, and the 11th to notch 100 career victories. But this Saturday, those accolades will be meaningless when the whistle blows on the opening of the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City.

Bennett, seniors end careers with tough loss

As time expired in the second overtime of the Hoosiers' first-round loss to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament, so did the career of IU coach Kathi Bennett. IU's 75-74 double-overtime loss to the Badgers Thursday afternoon put an end to Bennett's five-year run with the Hoosiers.

Wilson named Athlete of the Year in the Big Ten

Last weekend's Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships saw the Hoosiers score their highest team finish in more than a decade. Junior Aarik Wilson spearheaded IU's second-place effort winning both the long and triple jumps. Wilson defeated 2004's indoor long-jump champion and vaulted into the national lead in the triple jump by almost half a meter in the process.

Nelms chooses IU over top post

Charlie Nelms wants to take the helm of a historically black college or university -- just not quite yet. Earlier this week the IU vice president for institutional development and student affairs turned down an offer to become the next president at Tennessee State University.

Learning his lesson

On Dec. 21, 2002, IU basketball coach Mike Davis learned a valuable lesson. His Hoosiers, undefeated and ranked in the top 10 nationally, faced bitter rival Kentucky at Freedom Hall. A thrilling, up-tempo game entertained all in the crowd, but for most, the fireworks were yet to come.

Cheeks says goodbye, Pritchard to take over

When Mark Johnson and Ryan Tapak boarded the IU basketball ride in 2001, they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. They had no idea how high the ride went or how low, or where they would end up. But four years later, the ride is coming to an end, and the senior walk-on duo has experienced it like no one else.

Roberts ends 7-year run with IU Late in IU's win against Purdue at Assembly Hall, many Hoosier fans were introduced to a nickname that's been around for years. When Assembly Hall public address announcer Chuck Crabb announced senior Mike Roberts' name when Roberts entered the game, Crabb said, "The boss -- Mike Roberts."

Taco Bell boycott marches on Walnut St.

At 1 p.m. Thursday, a bus of 25 immigrant farm workers pulled up to the corner of Walnut and Seventh Streets across from Taco Bell. The farm workers, wearing blue "Boycott Taco Bell" shirts, joined a group of 30 IU students and Bloomington residents protesting on the sidewalk outside the fast-food restaurant. The protesters held up signs reading "No Quiero Taco Bell," "Boycott the Bell" and "32 Cents for Tomato Pickers."

Law school to court minorities

Since the early 1990s, IU has joined the efforts of numerous law schools throughout the country in recognizing National Law Student Recruitment Month. Those efforts continue with the IU Minority Law Day Program for minority students interested in studying law. The free program will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the IU Law School.

Eating disorder week promotes awareness

Junior Ashley Loehmer used to wake up "at the crack of dawn" and run miles a day on just a can of green beans. At one point, Loehmer would induce vomiting 12 to 14 times a day. She could "eat boxes" of laxatives and diuretics in a week. Loehmer has experienced the horrors of anorexia, bulimia and the emotional struggles that accompany severe eating disorders.

IU students perform in D.C.

Classical guitarist transcends status as former child prodigy

Many child prodigies become forgotten as they grow of age; they taste the sweetness of fame in their childhood, but the public eye eventually moves on, and they're unable to adjust to their new "common" status. Some talents shown in childhood are merely a symptom of accelerated growth rather than possessing an extraordinary gift, but a few fit the definition of genius.

Greenspan proposes consumption tax to boost economy

WASHINGTON -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Thursday that a new consumption tax -- such as a national sales tax -- could spark the economy as a partial replacement for income taxes. Greenspan cautioned that there would be both political and administrative difficulties in moving toward a new national tax system. Simplification is needed, perhaps a hybrid between consumption taxes and income taxes, he told the President's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform.

I was going to talk about something good for once. I was going to espouse compliments on the Indiana Daily Student; we've had a number of good stories lately. Pictures have been mostly in focus and relevant, and the informational graphics have hit the spot. On Wednesday, however, the Opinion page got most of the attention. A fellow student actually brought the column "Black History Month is racist" to my attention while I was walking through the Indiana Memorial Union.

Fossett completes flight around the world
