Sounds of the Andes and Africa

From folk sounds of the Andes in South America to the exhilarating percussion and dance numbers from Ghana and South Africa, the Andes Manta & Paschal Younge and the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble show had it all. The event, presented by the Raymond Foundation, took place 7 p.m. Friday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre as part of the 2005 Lotus Blossoms outreach program.

A 20-year-old student reported being fondled by a man in Read Center early Friday morning, According to police reports, officers were dispatched to Read after the woman told police that around 7:15 a.m., she was approached by a man as she walked near a third floor elevator at Read.

IU celebrates 185 years of history

IU held its 185th birthday bash in Assembly Hall Sunday in a ceremony honoring students, faculty and staff. The ceremony, also known as Founders Day, paid tribute to IU's rich past, reflected on the accomplishments of the present and speculated on the future of the University. IU President Adam Herbert, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized the role of democracy and diversity at IU.

It's been over 50 years since Alfred Kinsey blew the door off the bedroom with "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male," and its follow-up, "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female." Since then, the world has changed dramatically: civil rights, the feminist movement and the burgeoning of the gay rights movement. In Kinsey's legacy, he established the field of sex research and made IU the premier university for exploring human reproduction.

Assembly Hall site of reported assault

An 18-year-old female student reported that she was raped in an Assembly Hall bathroom during the IU-Purdue basketball game Tuesday. According to IU Police Department reports, the woman was found unconscious in the women's restroom on the west side near section C of Assembly Hall.

Hoosiers finalize schedule for 2005

IU hopes that colonels are tamer than ducks this fall. The Hoosiers released their 2005 football schedule Wednesday. Originally, IU was scheduled to play the Oregon Ducks at home Sept. 10; instead the Hoosiers will play the Nicholls State University Colonels at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium the same day.

Hoosiers look to right ship

For the first time all season, every one of the Hoosiers' opponents this weekend will be unranked. None of the teams have ever beaten IU, but the Hoosiers are not taking things lightly. Coming off of a loss to No. 6 California, the No. 9 Hoosiers hope to rebound when they head east to start the College Water Polo Association Western Division play.

Training under fire

A single, forcible swing of the axe pulverized the front door, allowing the firefighters access to the smoke-choked house. A Bloomington Fire Department engine company had arrived to the residence on the corner of 18th and Dunn streets minutes after emergency dispatch received a frantic call from a student. She had been studying in the living room when she noticed smoke drifting from upstairs. The caller was sure her roommate was upstairs when the fire started and hadn't made it out.

Hoosiers fall in Bennett's final game

INDIANAPOLIS -- The opener to the Big Ten Tournament that pitted IU against Wisconsin showed exactly why March is known for its "madness." In a game that featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes -- all occurring after the 11-minute mark in the second half -- the final lead change proved to be the demise for the Hoosiers as they fell 75-74 to Wisconsin in double overtime. Even though IU managed to get to the second overtime, it almost didn't happen.
