Former 9-11 commissioners say United States at risk for more terror attacks

·

WASHINGTON -- The United States is at great risk for more terrorist attacks because Congress and the White House have failed to enact several strong security measures, members of the former Sept. 11, 2001, commission said Sunday. "It's not a priority for the government right now," said the former chairman, Thomas Kean, ahead of the group's release of a report Monday assessing how well its recommendations have been followed.

Some FEMA trailers in state of disrepair

·

GULFPORT, Miss. -- Melvin Barkum is, in one respect, a lucky man. After his Gulfport home was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, he got a trailer from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. But all in his FEMA trailer is not as well as it could be. After he switched on his trailer's thermostat, he lifted the lid of a storage bench and illuminated a water pipe with a flashlight. Within a moment, the visibly leaking water was pattering onto the high-pitched smoke alarm.

The year to come

·

With 2005 winding down to a close, we need to start thinking about the year to come. What will 2006 hold for us? Will it be better than 2005? Worse? I don't like to brag, but I'm a fair hand with a crystal ball. If you don't like spoilers, stop reading now. But if you're like me, and aren't above a little peek at what's around the corner, here's a bit of what to expect:

Beyond the past

·

We, as a country, have become desensitized to war. True, politicians are still jabbering back and forth, but the discourse on both sides is comprised largely of sound bytes that lack real meaning. More than two years after the fact, we're suddenly fascinated with the asinine debate over the merits of having gone to war in the first place. I'm left a little incredulous, wondering why there wasn't more discussion beforehand.

Save ourselves

·

Tookie was a bad man. Stanley "Tookie" Williams co-founded the Crips, the infamous blue-wearing gang that began in south central Los Angeles. Critics accuse him of creating a legacy that extended violence throughout the country. Williams is convicted of killing four people during two armed robberies and currently sits on death row in California. In one robbery, he allegedly shot a man in his back while high on PCP. In the other robbery, the death scene of the three victims was so ghastly that the investigating officer said, "I've seen a lot in my 36 years on the force, but that's one of about a half-dozen scenes that have stuck with me just because of the carnage."

From Bloomington to Brussels

·

The Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C., recently made a welcome contribution to IU -- a $351,000 grant. The money will establish a European Union Center of Excellence. We feel this move merits our applause as it expands the resources of an already well-developed international studies program at IU.

USC, Texas finish 2005 the way they started it

·

For the second straight year, the two teams that started at the top of The Associated Press poll held those spots for the entire regular season. Southern California was No. 1 and Texas No. 2 on Sunday in the Top 25, just as they were in the preseason. USC received 56 first-place votes and 1,616 points, a day after winning its 34th straight game, 66-19 over UCLA. Southern California has been No. 1 for a record 33 straight polls.

Marathon runner completes race despite intestinal damage

After running for about four hours straight, every part of senior Adam Jacobs' body hurt. Jacobs ran the 26-mile Philadelphia Marathon Nov. 20, driven by not only his personal ambition but the support of Zeta Beta Tau, the fraternity of which he is a member, and its philanthropic project that Jacobs initiated and named "Race to Protect Human Rights."

No hangover here

·

After going toe to toe with the top team in the country, it had to be hard for the Hoosiers to focus on their game with Eastern Michigan Saturday night. And in Bloomington, the hangover capital of the world, no one could blame them if they came out uninspired, flat and undisciplined. But they didn't.

Colts make it a dozen straight with 35-3 win

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- If there was any worry about a letdown or a "trap game" after Monday night's emotional win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Colts quickly quieted these fears with a 35-3 win over the Tennessee Titans Sunday. "I don't believe in 'trap games,' especially in the NFL. These athletes are just too good," said Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who had three touchdowns and 187 yards on 13 of 17 passing attempts as Indy moved to 12-0.

Final relay pushes IU past Wildcats

·

The No. 18 IU women's swimming and diving team surged past the Northwestern Wildcats with an emphatic relay win in the final race of the meet to clinch a 159-141 victory Friday in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers now boast a 5-2 record (3-1 Big Ten) on the season. "The women's meet went down to the last relay," IU coach Ray Looze said. "I was very pleased with our tenacity ... Northwestern is very good in dual meets. I was pleased with the calm under pressure that our team showed."

School record broken in win against No. 17 Northwestern

·

Junior Colin Russell broke a school record in the 200-yard freestyle this weekend as the No. 11 Indiana men's swimming and diving team defeated No. 17 Northwestern, 161-139. Russell's record-breaking time of 1:35:50 also qualified him for the NCAA Championships March 23 to 25 in Atlanta. "I was so close the past two years," Russell said. "It felt great just to know it's out of the way and I don't have to worry about it."

Hoosiers split road contests

·

The IU women's basketball team fell just short of accomplishing something it had not done since the 2000-01 season this weekend. After beating Belmont Tuesday and Southern Illinois Friday, the Hoosiers (3-4) were poised to win three straight road games for the first time in five seasons. On Sunday, Louisville refused to cooperate, beating the Hoosiers 72-67 at Freedom Hall.

Enjoy your cake, coach

·

After a 75-67 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday night, IU coach Mike Davis embraced hugs and handshakes from his players. His wife, Tamilya, even promised him a cake. But it wasn't just because the Hoosiers tallied their fourth win of the season, and it certainly wasn't because they beat a mid-major school. When the final buzzer rang, Davis became the fourth coach in IU history to hit the 100 victory mark and the second fastest behind Bob Knight. It took Knight five seasons and Davis until the start of his sixth.
