Scares, laughs, a fleet of alien slugs

·

How refreshing it is to see a horror film that isn't about sexy hip teens being hip and having sexy teen sex. Instead the makers of "Slither" thought that they could cover their lack of teen sexiness with intelligent, if slightly dark, humor. People have attempted the comedy horror before, usually they are parodies of the horror genre like "Shaun of the Dead" or "Scream," but "Slither" is different. It doesn't parody anything. It is just funny.

Ice Age 2: The environment strikes back

·

A family film should be good for the family (and maybe for a date, as well), and "Ice Age: The Meltdown" is certainly that. Very impressive animation is presented in this film, which will impress the older viewer and dazzle the younger viewer. However, as a legitimate, enjoyable movie, "Ice Age 2" unfortunately falls short of the standards that the first "Ice Age" set. The first film is filled with funny, often hilarious moments and the characters are all incredibly differentiated and fun. In the sequel, the three new major characters are missing the complexity of the three original main characters. There is Ellie (voiced by Queen Latifah), the female mammoth who is convinced she is a possum, and her two brothers, Eddie and Crash (actual possums).

Just some 'Basic' shit

·

Sharon Stone is back in the sequel to the thriller that sent her to stardom. Hollywood is also back. Back to making absolutely absurd movies that shouldn't be found anywhere near a movie theater. The need to make a sequel to every single success just boggles my mind. Hollywood should simply learn to put out a good movie and leave it at that. "Basic Instinct 2" is nothing but trash, similarly to many recent sequels. The opening scene has some action and is somewhat amusing making audiences think that this could be a decent movie, but quite frankly the best part of the movie was the transition to the closing credits.

Brennan was chosen from a pool of sports writers from IU and other schools that attended Thursday's U.S. Basketball Writer's Association's Full Court Press Seminar in Ernie Pyle Hall.

IU men's lacrosse trumps Pittsburgh

·

For IU men's lacrosse midfielder Jason Bowman, his team's 12-8 win over the University of Pittsburgh was indicative of what the team is capable of -- but also of what is holding the squad back.

War stories

·

I attended the annual reunion of the 73rd Bomb Wing in Memphis, Tenn. last weekend. The 73rd flew B-29s from Saipan to bomb Japan during World War II. I saw pictures and heard stories from the aging men of the "Greatest Generation." Many of their stories made me think about the discussion of the Iraq War and how it will be described in 60 years.

Suspended from play

·

The future was looking bright for the Duke lacrosse team: The team has been ranked No. 2 in the nation and was expected to contend for another NCAA championship title this season. That is until recently, when it was suspended for the rest of the season following charges of gang rape.

Down with Smallwood

·

I love Bloomington. It's the only city I know where you can find an elderly man in overalls wearing an NRA cap and a slew of obnoxious East Coast girls in the same restaurant.

Stuck in the middle with IU

·

Recently members of the IUPUI staff and faculty have voiced concerns regarding, what they perceive to be, lack of attention from IU President Adam Herbert. Some feel the Bloomington campus receives far too much attention and far too many resources from University administrators, which is a claim that is not entirely unfounded. It is true that the Bloomington campus does receive a disproportionate amount of attention relative to other campuses, but it does so for good reasons.

IU can provide grad students better benefits now or later. It's in the University's best interests to do it now.

·

It's not often that I make common cause with the Graduate Employees Organization. Don't get me wrong, there are folks in the GEO who I know and I quite like -- it's just that our ideological differences tend to lead us to disagree on things. However, regarding the University's short-changing of graduate student health and dental insurance, we find ourselves on the same page. Furthermore, recent statements made by officials of the Graduate and Professional Students Organization -- grad students' official voice with the administration -- indicate that the GPSO is on this very page as well.
