Hurdles cleared for detainee legislation

WASHINGTON -- Republicans on Wednesday cleared procedural hurdles in the House and Senate on the way to giving President George W. Bush authority to detain, interrogate and try terrorism detainees before military commissions.

Bloomington's newest hospital is expected to open Oct. 9, but it could be weeks before ambulances will take emergency room patients through its doors. Monroe Hospital still must negotiate with Bloomington Hospital to determine how 911 calls will be divided, Monroe Hospital CEO Dean Melton said.

Rice comments on UN activities in Lebanon

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Condoleezza Rice called for U.N. peacekeeping forces to enforce the "very robust" mandate authorized by the organization. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) has said the mandate places Lebanese sovereignty paramount, and Unifil says it will not take action without authorization from the Lebanese army. Rice said the difference between her own stance and Unifil's is a problem of interpretation.

Golfer 'Lord Byron' dies at 94

IRVING, Texas -- Byron Nelson, golf's courtly "Lord Byron" whose 11 straight tournament victories in 1945 stand as one of sports' most enduring records, died Tuesday. He was 94.
