Welcome Freshmen!

The Editorial Board wants to welcome you to IU! You’re about to begin the greatest, most rewarding and most hectic four years of your life. New friends will replace old ones, you’ll become intimately familiar with the Village Pantry’s graveyard shift and you’ll learn to despise “blue book” finals. Some of you will be rooming with your best friend from high school (good luck); others of you will be moving in with someone you’ve never met and praying you aren’t paired with the weird kid (even better luck).

Buying upperclassmen

·

This August, you’ll say good-bye to your high school circle and be thrust into a world where you will have few or no friends. But don’t worry; thousands of freshmen will be having the same problem as you, and in no time you’ll have a gang of newbies with whom you’ll be wreaking havoc with in the dorm lounges.

Bloomington 101

The college life depicted in “Old School” and “Animal House” doesn’t also have to be your life. Though rampant pleasure-seeking is certainly a guiding principle for some students, others prefer mimicking a four-year version of Roman military strategy: Come, see and conquer.

Live It Up

·

As if incoming freshman aren’t bombarded with enough “advice,” I’ve decided throw my own suggestions into the mix. Not that my advice is better than or even just as good as the advice you’ve heard before. It’s just what worked for me.

DUIs 4-eva

As news networks have told you by now, heiress and idiot Paris Hilton is going to the clink for driving with a suspended license after having previously been arrested for driving under the influence. While few in the tabloid media consider Paris’ penance unwarranted, Nancy Grace and her ratings-starved ilk raise an important question outside of the Hilton context: Is the punishment for drunk driving fair? The punishment is just as fair as victimizing people who fall asleep at the wheel, or rear-end another car while looking at a navigation screen or do anything to increase their chances of being in an accident. That is to say, it’s not fair at all.

Gripped with Fear

·

Slightly over a month ago, the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings started a ripple through the nation that has led to increased fear about such isolated atrocities and intense discussion about reforms that might protect against them. The 33 left dead by the actions of Cho Seung Hui put the nation in a state of horror and wonder.

Glowing green

·

Regardless of what they might say, with very few exceptions, everybody wants superpowers. I can remember watching “The Secret World of Alex Mack” on Nickelodeon back in my blissful preteen years and thinking how cool it would be to be able to melt myself into a puddle of silver goo and travel around the hallways of my middle school.

Un-intelligent decision

Hardly anyone will dispute the fact that University professors can be strongly opinionated. Guillermo Gonzalez, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Iowa State University, is among them. Gonzalez, who was recently denied tenure by a university review committee, has been one of intelligent design’s most vocal supporters.
