Study: Dandelions increasing with global warming

Although it might not be the biggest problem that global warming has produced, increased dandelion strength and reproduction is another thing to tack on to a list that proves global warming is real, said Todd Royer, an assistant professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Wayward youth, birds and garden gnomes are welcome in Helen Hillenburg’s home at 1007 W. 1st St. The wrinkled, slightly stooped woman raised eight foster children in her tiny home and loved them with her huge heart, she said. “I love kids,” Hillenburg said. “When the kids don’t have no place to go, I take them in. I can’t see them on the street. I take them in and give them food and give them clothes. I ain’t gonna see no kids hungry.”

Mathers’ event celebrates influential Brazilian music

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures will present “Sounds of Brazil” at 7 p.m. Friday to highlight influential Brazilian music. Special guest Valeria DeCastro, a Brazilian vocalist, guitarist and composer, will perform songs from various Brazilian composers along with her own.

The Bloomington Musicians and Songwriters Association will present a fast-paced variety show featuring performances by musicians, poets, comedians, jugglers, dancers and trapeze artists Saturday at the John Waldron Arts Center.

The violin, guitar and glockenspiel do not seem like very many instruments, but when all played by the same person, along with whistling, singing and frequent use of a looping machine, they can be hard to manage. Chicagoan and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird uses these instruments to create sounds comparable to that of a symphony, but with an indie, folk-rock twist

Nick’s landmark to remain visible

The Nick’s English Hut sign on the east side of the building looked lost this week behind the scaffolding and construction of the new building next door. Tartan Realty Group is erecting a three-story apartment and retail building on the old Jiffy Treat property, located at 425 E. Kirkwood Ave., directly next to Nick’s.
