Professor earns prestigious award

IU Jacobs School of Music professor Claude Baker was named the 2008-09 Paul Fromm composer-in-residence for the American Academy in Rome two weeks ago. The Academy is a “very famous hotbed for composers at the beginning of their career,” said Don Freund, acting chair of the composition department.

Former U.S. security advisor cancels speech

United Way distributes nearly $29k in aid, grants

United Way of Monroe County recently awarded grants totaling almost $29,000 to eight social welfare agencies. Projects by these agencies will be funded through capacity-building grants, which are intended to improve an organization’s infrastructure.

Internship fair brings nationwide companies

The Career Development Center will host the 2008 Career Services Internship Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union. The event brings in more than 60 recruiters for internship opportunities for students in all majors.

Seminar to offer retail information

Kelsea Foist, a senior majoring in retail studies and a career seminar officer, has been attending the Retail Student Organization Career Seminar since her sophomore year and has found this cliche to ring true. Making small talk at the seminar her sophomore year led to a business card that ultimately led to starting her career at Target Corporate as a business analyst in Minneapolis following her graduation in May this year.

Housing fair has more than 100 choices

Students will have the opportunity to explore more than 100 on- and off-campus housing options at today’s Housing Fair, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. The fair, which is sponsored by the Indiana Daily Student, will be set up like a job fair, but instead of recruiters, housing vendors will man the tables. While attending the fair, students can schedule appointments to see various properties and some locations will offer virtual tours.

IU recruit Terrell Holloway, who signed his letter of intent Nov. 14, will provide something IU has sorely lacked during the Sampson era: a pure point guard.olloway, the 100th-ranked prospect in the class of 2008 according to Rivals.com, was ranked the No. 14 fifth-year player in the country by Hoop Scoop Online in September.
