Chase needs a new job

·

How is Chase Cooper the opinion editor? He never cites his sources and frequently doesn’t get his facts right. In his Jan. 29 column (“Keep the change”) he said that half of the adults in the U.S. would not vote for Hillary

Real obscenities

·

I find it odd that IU Athletic Director Rick Greenspan is ready to call up the IDS and harp on the students for chanting obscenities, but couldn’t be bothered a few

Bigotry works both ways

·

Anna Piontek’s recent article “Indiana Bigotry” (Feb. 4) is mere rhetoric. Laws that prohibit gay marriage do not violate the separation of church and state and are not hateful. In fact, Anna’s own criticism of

Remembering Dr. Katz

·

I was saddened to hear about the death of Dr. Irving Katz on Jan. 24, 2008. Dr. Katz meant a lot to me. I had the pleasure of taking five of his history courses, including American Jewish History. He more than held my interest. Each of his lectures was more like story time rather th

Stand for something

·

I talk about politics a lot. Many people assume that it is my sole passion to follow politics; in reality, it is not. I enjoy politics and am proud of the work I do.

Devil in the details

Alot of people will tell you that it’s the Devil who is responsible for all the world’s suffering. But as far as I’m concerned, the Devil doesn’t exist. I think it’s

A gamble not worth taking

·

At the risk of stating the obvious, it is apparent that Indiana is facing a severe cash crunch. Projections from government agencies predict that the state will experience a $231 million shortfall this year alone. So, when the legislature looked to bulk up revenues, it left the usual suspects untouched. Instead, the legislature hit upon an incongruous idea, one that is at odds with the professed values of legislators. Thanks to House Bill 1153, currently under consideration in the Senate, more than 7,000 bars, taverns and restaurants in the state will likely soon be able to offer pull tabs and other forms of low-stakes gambling. Independent agencies have estimated that as a result of this legislation, the state can raise anywhere from $5 million to $25 million.

Roach Motel: Partiers of the past, present find common ground

·

Behind a white, almost rotted, wooden sign accented with two hand-drawn roaches, a passerby would not suspect the Roach Motel to be more than an ordinary house with an unfortunate nickname. But from the Dunn family to a famous drummer to porn stars, the Roach Motel at the corner of Seventh Street and Indiana Avenue has seen it all.

Inefficient intolerance

·

Last week, the Indiana State Senate approved a joint resolution endorsing an amendment to the Indiana Constitution that would define marriage as only between a man and a woman. This amendment would effectively act as a permanent ban on gay marriage in the state of Indiana. The amendment now goes to the House.

Wreck sports

It’s 1:20 in the morning – do you know where your roommate is? Mine’s clattering in the door with her lacrosse sticks, red-faced and exhausted after another club sports practice running from 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Bye bye, Rudy

·

Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination after a poor showing in Florida, and thus the man who led national polls for months played no role in Super Tuesday aside from supporting Sen. John McCain. For that, his awkward campaign strategy will likely be regarded as one of the most flawed in history.

All McCain's men

·

They say the first step to solving any problem is admitting you have a problem in the first place. And I just want to say “congratulations” to the Republican voters in Florida and South Carolina, for maybe, just maybe, taking the first step on the long road to recovery.
