Darkness prevails

·

Although the film’s special effects are top notch, we never see them overshadow the human conflict like most superhero capers. This conflict is a question of how long humanity can remain decent, and it serves as the backbone of the film. It drives the plot, complicates the characters and transforms just another superhero film into an epic crime masterpiece.

Outlaw Journalist, the man behind the reputation

·

Fueled by Bob Dylan’s “Tambourine Man” and a glass tinkling with ice, Hunter S. Thompson did things no one in American journalism or literature had ever done before. William McKeen’s book “Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson” chronicles the wild ride that was Thompson’s life from his birth in Louisville, Ky., to his funeral at Owl Farm in Colorado, where his ashes were shot from a double-thumbed fist as fireworks exploded in the background.

‘Outlaw Journalist’ continues to inspire

·

The image of a drug induced man with a cigarette holder and a shaved head is how many people remember Hunter S. Thompson, said William McKeen, University of Florida Journalism Professor and author of the recently published “Outlaw Journalist: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson.”

An ode to the elephant ear

·

Generally speaking, when I spend $20 on a meal, I expect it to involve a lovely juicy steak, or perhaps some kind of seafood fare not native to anywhere near Indiana.

Protection from satire

A sizable number of people in the national political and media elite think that you are an ignorant cretin. What other conclusion can be drawn from the controversy over The New Yorker’s cover illustration of Barack and Michelle Obama sharing a “terrorist fist-bump”?

And the Emmy nominees aren’t...

·

Picture this scene: an extravagantly beautiful amphitheater filled with the most gorgeous TV stars, all spiffed up in their most dapper red-carpet garb. Imagine that it’s all an award show. For kicks, let’s call it the Emmys, which supposedly honor the best from TV.

The speech enforcer

·

As anyone who’s a frequent reader of this column knows, I’m one of the more ardent defenders of free speech on this staff, and possibly in the world. Basically, aside from falsely shouting “fire” in a crowded theater and causing a panic, I think people should be allowed to make basically whatever statements they choose to make, so long as they’re in the proper forums.

Product placement

·

This week, The New York Times revealed that the Meredith Corporation, which owns 12 local television stations across the country, has incorporated product placement into its news programs – specifically, placing cups of McDonald’s iced coffee in front of their anchors during their morning news broadcasts. And all I can say is: It’s about time!
