Early voting in HPER to take place today

People who can’t wait the last three weeks until Election Day can vote early on campus today through Thursday. Voters registered in Monroe County can fill out in-person absentee ballots between 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at racquetball room 12 in the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

Gov. Mitch Daniels, Andrew Horning and Jill Long Thompson debate on Sept. 23 at the Jasper Arts Center in Jasper, Ind.

Gubernatorial candidates to debate at auditorium

Indiana’s gubernatorial candidates will sit down for their third and final debate tonight at the IU Auditorium. Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, Democrat Jill Long Thompson and Libertarian Andy Horning will debate at 7 p.m. This will be one of the last opportunities voters have to see the differences between the candidates. Tom Cochrun, a retired Indianapolis broadcaster, will moderate the event. The debate will feature more give-and-take between the candidates, said Kyle Niederpruem, a board member of the Indiana Debate Commission.

New exit ramp opens in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – A new exit ramp opened from Interstate 65/70 into downtown Indianapolis, replacing a ramp that was built to accommodate traffic for the long-demolished Market Square Arena.

FORT WAYNE – Taylor University will end its undergraduate program in Fort Wayne in May, moving some of the school’s programs to its main campus in Upland.

I kissed a girl, but did I like it?

The generation that created the Madonna and Britney kiss and Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed a Girl” has inspired a new term: hetero-flexible. This trendy word describes straight women who make out with each other to entice men but don’t consider themselves lesbians or bisexual. “The word has no scientific value,” said William L. Yarber, a senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction. “It’s merely a pop culture definition, like the magazines at the beginning of the grocery line.” Even so, the popularity of the term has fueled a heated debate over whether “hetero-flexibility” reflects sexual liberation or sexual regression.

Program would order parents to get kids to school

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Alarmed by the frequency of suspensions handed out to truant students, a judge has proposed a plan to give schools’ attendance agreements with parents the force of law.

Abstinence-only sex education inadequate, major sexuality journal finds

Can what you don’t know really hurt you? According to a series of studies in the September issue of Sexuality Research and Social Policy, one of the top journals in the field, the answer is yes. The five articles in this special issue conclude that, among other shortcomings, abstinence-only sexual education programs are often ineffective and contain inaccurate information.

Technology to make ads more personalized

In Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report,” the main character walks down a long corridor as personalized advertisements chase after him along the walls. A video billboard shouts to Tom Cruise’s character in the film: “John Anderton, you could use a Guinness right about now!” Current advances being made in computer science indicate that real-time advertising, specifically tailored to individuals, will soon exist outside of science-fiction movies.

Manning had 2nd summer knee surgery

One surgery wasn’t enough to fix Peyton Manning’s left knee. Colts coach Tony Dungy confirmed Monday, after nearly two months of deflecting questions, that Manning was operated on a second time before returning to the field in late August. Dungy doesn’t believe the second operation – to fix an infected bursa sac – was the reason the team had a sluggish start this season. “I don’t think it set him back. It was part of the rehab process,” Dungy said Monday. “The time frame we were initially looking at was when he came back.” Manning was not available in the locker room Monday, a day after the Colts routed Baltimore 31-3, in what was easily his best game of the season.

At chocolate shop, lessons learned one year later

After studying to become a physician, David Fletcher decided to devote his life to chocolate. He opened BLU Boy Chocolate Café and Cakery, 112 E. Kirkwood Ave. In mid-August, BLU Boy celebrated its one-year anniversary. Fletcher and his partner, Scott Jackman, said they’ve learned plenty in the past year about what it takes to run a business.

Hollywood agency, talent production group starts

A new student-run talent agency has arrived on IU’s campus, straight from Hollywood, and it’s encouraging all creative students to join. The Blooming Artists Agency, also known as BAA, will function like a real Hollywood talent production company where members can come to a student-run management team with a script, idea or concept.

IU hockey sweeps 2 with Wright State to hit 4-0

The IU club hockey team swept Wright State in Dayton, Ohio. Over the weekend, moving them to 4-0 on the year. On Friday, the Hoosiers got behind early, but came back to win 7-4 with a strong third period. Adam Logue and Dan Keeney both exploded, notching two goals and two assists each. IU dominated the ice with 35 shots on goal, compared to 18 for the Raiders. On Saturday, the game was closer, with the Hoosiers coming out on top 4-3 after a wild second period.

Weezy a sports pundit?

In a weekend when I can honestly say I watched very little sports, it appears from the looks of SportsCenter to be one of great excitement. I was researching for this week’s column by surfing the Web, and I came across a lot of interesting material. In an article written by ESPN columnist Mark Schlabach, I noticed Clemson fired their football coach, Tommy Bowden, after a disappointing 3-3 start. Chicago Tribune reporter Fred Mitchell wrote about how the Falcons pulled off a miracle in beating the Chicago Bears. ESPN NASCAR blogger Ryan McGee mentioned Cindy McCain showed up at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., to watch the NASCAR Bank of America 500. But finally, I came across Lil’ Wayne’s ESPN blog to find some baseball news, and I thought, “Wait a minute. Did I just see a blog by Lil’ Wayne? The same rapper who released The Carter III earlier this year? Young Money? Weezy?”

21st Century Scholarship program helps students pay for college

Many students who can’t pay pricey tuition payments without help turn to the 21st Century Scholarship Covenant program. The program, now in its second year, is part of the state’s 21st Century Scholars Program. The state-run program provides funding for the cost of tuition, said Roger Thompson, vice provost for enrollment management.

Wall Street soars as government pledges bank aid

Wall Street snapped back from last week’s devastating losses after major governments announced further steps to support the global banking system, including plans by the U.S. Treasury to buy stocks in some banks. All the major indexes rose well over 6 percent, and the Dow Jones industrials gained 500 points.

North Korea renews UN access to nuclear site

North Korea has lifted its ban on U.N. nuclear inspectors and is again allowing them access to the plutonium-producing plant it used to set up an atomic test explosion, diplomats said Monday.
