The short story "Harrison Bergeron," by Hoosier Kurt Vonnegut brings up an interesting question, and one which Americans have been thinking about since Alexis de Tocqueville’s book “Democracy in America”. Are absolute equality and absolute freedom mutually exclusive?


A disappointed Danica Patrick walks away from her car after being denied one last qualifying attempt before the 6 p.m. deadline Saturday afternoon at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Patrick earned a 10th place qualifying position marking the fifth consecutive season she will start in the top 10. Patrick's best qualifying result came as rookie in 2005 when she qualified fourth.

Indianapolis 500 Lineup

The Indianapolis 500 is gearing up for its 93rd annual race May 24. On Saturday, 11 drivers qualified for the race with Helio Castroneves taking the pole. This is Castroneves’ third pole position since 2003. Positions 12 through 22 were placed Sunday and the last 11 drivers will race for their positions Saturday.



Seniors react to commencement address

Former Justice of the High Court of Australia Michael Kirby’s commencement speech fell on deaf ears Saturday, some members of the graduating class said, while others lauded his efforts and bravery to discuss his homosexuality on stage.

The sorry state of print journalism takes root in several causes, and the current recession certainly hasn’t helped as ad revenue is expected to fall 15 percent in May. More significantly than the recession though, competition from Internet sources – particularly news aggregators such as Google News , Drudge Report and The Huffington Post – threatens the industry’s long-term viability by offering access to free online content.

The world is 'close'

I leave for Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday, and I can’t help but feel that even though Korea is halfway across the world, it’s somehow not so distant. Thomas Friedman said the world is flat. I say the world is close, a 17-hour plane flight close.



Singer-songwriter Marc Haggerty plays at a jam session Sunday at the Third Street Park. Haggerty, along with other musicians, hosted a reunion concert Saturday.

After hosting a reunion concert Saturday, several Bloomington-based musicians from the '60s and '70s took part in a jam session and discussed the culture and community of the Bloomington music scene from that era.

IU overcome by Purdue on senior day

IU would not succumb on its senior day without giving rival Purdue a hard fight, and it did so twice in a season-ending doubleheader Saturday.

44-year-old student adapts to college life

Troy Haas is an IU student. Haas, a sophomore who lives in Eigenmann Hall, plans to earn degrees in English and theatre and enjoys playing intramural softball. But Haas does not always fit into the college student mold, given that he is 44 years old.
