Registered fall 2009 students will have to wait a little longer to know IU’s new tuition rates.
The IU board of trustees meeting Thursday and Friday left the University without set tuition rates that could last until the end of June.
IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre said the Indiana Legislature passes a new budget every two years but did not pass the next two-year budget when it met April 29. The University will not be able to set tuition rates until it knows how much money it will receive from the state government, MacIntyre said.
“We usually receive about $500 million a year from the state,” MacIntyre said. “It composes about 22 to 23 percent of our budget.”
There are recommendations for the state government to hold a special session to determine a budget near June 15, meaning University officials might not know about its tuition rates until the end of June, MacIntyre said.
The proposed special session will be after the board of trustees meeting on June 11 and 12.
More than 7,000 incoming freshmen had paid their $100 enrollment deposits by Friday, and MacIntyre said the University understands the concerns about unset tuition rates.
“As of now there is nothing the University can do,” he said.
