Stem cell debate raises ethical, political concerns

In the months leading up to the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama campaigned with a platform that promised change. Just a few months into his term, Obama initiated some of these changes regarding stem cell research.

Undercover police lead fight against drugs

Controlled drug purchases by the Bloomington Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit led to 140 arrests and the seizure of $158,000 last year. The Special Investigations Unit, which purchases narcotics in order to build cases against Bloomington drug dealers, is a major part of local drug interdiction efforts.

Latino GLBT group forms for campus support

Senior Enrique Perez is helping create a Latino gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender group at IU, called LOUTin@s, to create a support community. The group is the first of its kind at IU. Lillian Casillas, director of La Casa Latino Cultural Center serves as one of the advisers for the group and said it is building a strong foundation so it will last for years to come.

Indianapolis loss not a testament to will, discipline

As a friend and I drove down State Road 37 to Bloomington late Sunday night after Super Bowl XLIV, I couldn’t help but wonder where some of the outrageous, senseless slurs were coming from on the Colts’ postgame radio show. This was a team that, at the most inopportune and unfortunate time, played its first subpar game of the season. It was previously a 16-2 team that came out firing in the playoffs after facing some of the most heated criticism in sports during recent years – criticism that, just or unjust, probably would have divided most locker rooms in the league.

Yeagley brings star-studded recruits to IU

IU soccer has a new coach and a new class but the same game plan: Win championships. Joining the ranks of over 400 members of the IU men’s soccer family is the 2010 class: Kerel Bradford, Ryan Bristol, Jacob Bushue, Nikita Kotlov, Dylan Lax, Matt McKain, Harrison Petts, Taylor Reeves and Blake Wise. “This is a very talented group that I feel can make a positive impact in the program,” IU coach Todd Yeagley said. “The 2010 class will certainly give us a big boost moving forward.”

Microbreweries fight for winery rights

A bill introduced by State Sens. Ron Alting, R-Lafayette, and Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville, would allow microbreweries to sell takeout beer on Sundays. The bill passed 41-9 in the Indiana Senate on Jan. 21 and is awaiting a vote from the House, which could vote sometime this week.
