·

At 9 a.m. Saturday, between 150 and 200 people participated in Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority's Pike/Kappa Klassic 5k run and walk. Both the Pike and the Kappa houses participated in the charity event, along with other greek houses and students. All the proceeds are going to the Middle Way House, said junior Shawn Touney, philanthropy chair for Pikes. Touney said the run raised about $1,500 for the house, which supports battered women and their children.

Friel's 'Translations' powerful, bittersweet

·

Bittersweet Irish music filled the University Theatre Friday, setting the tone for Brian Friel's "Translations." The stage was transformed into a rustic farmhouse and the student actors were transformed into hearty townspeople, full of life, joy and pain. The play simultaneously explored how love transcends language, and how suppressing a language can suppress a people.

McDonald's as high art

·

McDonald's is a good place to go to experience the tangible effects of the passing years. That's the reason I go, so I can see where we've been and where we're heading. Where are we now? The age of the huge Extra Value Meal and the almost violent desire to collide food with our loud, jabbering orifice. But we get to feel good about this tendency by educating ourselves in art museums about how other cultures eat.

Von Lee Theater's future undecided

·

In May, Kerasotes closed the Von Lee Theater, 517 E. Kirkwood Ave., a long-time home to art and indie films and their fans. Now, people are speculating about the future of the building, which has been thrusting unique films into Bloomington's limelight since the 1920s. One of the best future homes for the deserted theater is IU, some professors say.

Crocodiles make for great reality TV

·

I need more violence, more blood and gore, more reality on my television. While watching burnt flesh on "Survivor" and 200-pound men hitting each other in the head for 12 three-minute increments, I thirst for more, and so does the American public.

Western culture crumbles

·

Last week, without much fanfare, "Temptation Island" finished its season. Thank God. I never watched the show, but I read enough about it to know that it's a warning sign. Like when your car starts making a noise that sounds like squirrels are caught in the fan belt.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Lisa Bluder still has Kathi Bennett's number. Between the two coaches, whose career paths have moved in similar directions, Bluder's teams have beaten Bennett's.

Pizza, Purdue on Hoosier team's menu

·

Dinner with Doubles? Most would consider this a double date. While it is a date of some sorts, the men's tennis team does not plan on treating its guests kindly on the court.
