Strong play drives success

There is no "I" in team, but the recent strong play of junior midfielder Kim Grodek and sophomore forward Kristen Zmijewski have helped the team to a 4-1-1 record in its last six games. In those games, Grodek has amassed 11 shots and scored three goals, including two in the Hoosiers' overtime victory over Michigan State.

Sox hold off Yankees 3-2, series heads back to NYC

BOSTON -- No beanballs or brawls, just a dynamite knuckleball by Tim Wakefield that gave the New York Yankees fits and allowed the Boston Red Sox to knot the AL championship series. Wakefield struck out eight over seven-plus innings, and Todd Walker and Trot Nixon provided the offense with solo homers, leading Boston over New York 3-2 Monday night to tie the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. There was none of the fighting that marred Game 3 Saturday, and Wakefield beat Mike Mussina for the second time in the series, which now must return to Yankee Stadium later this week.

Grant County officials reverse plaque decision

MARION, IND. -- Grant County Commissioners on Monday reversed a decision that would have allowed the placement of a courthouse plaque as part of a "day of reconciliation" service at the site of a 1930 lynching.

TALLULAH, La. -- A church bus from Texas slammed into a into a tractor-trailer Monday on Interstate 20, killing six people and injuring at least nine. State police spokesman Lt. William Davis said it appeared that the tractor-trailer had stalled and was pulled over on the shoulder of the road when it was struck.

The European Union approved $233 million in reconstruction aid for Iraq on Monday, with Britain the only EU nation for now to provide additional funding from its national budget.

Officials believe Saddam alive in Tikrit

Resistance forces killed one American soldier and wounded two others Monday in a grenade attack in Tikrit, where the U.S. military said it believes Saddam Hussein has been hiding out and influencing the anti-U.S. insurgency. Another soldier was killed by a land mine blast north of here.

In 1991, Joel Hernandez, an employee of 25 years at Hughes Missile Systems in Arizona, showed up to work smelling of alcohol. The company decided to administer a drug test that showed Hernandez had also used cocaine.

A 20-foot red, white and blue billboard with "Prall for Mayor" in large block letters coasted down Third Street during the Homecoming parade Friday. Prall himself, along with his campaign workers, ran along the side, smiling at the crowds, passing out notepads with his name printed on the top and Dum Dum lollipops.
