Strong play drives success

Leadership from junior-sophomore combo helps Hoosiers to 4-1-1 start

There is no "I" in team, but the recent strong play of junior midfielder Kim Grodek and sophomore forward Kristen Zmijewski have helped the team to a 4-1-1 record in its last six games. In those games, Grodek has amassed 11 shots and scored three goals, including two in the Hoosiers' overtime victory over Michigan State. Zmijewski has also scored three goals in the same six-game stretch. \nIU coach Mick Lyon said he believes that slightly altering where Grodek plays has had a big impact on how she's been playing.\n"We've got her working on the near post now, and it's helped her be able to focus more on set plays," Lyon said. "In practice, we've spent extra time on her striking the ball. Recently, she's been able to get closer to the goal. She's a phenomenal goal-scorer."\nAgainst Michigan State, the team was facing a 2-1 deficit with only two minutes remaining in the game. Not about to give up, Grodek took a pass from sophomore forward Robin Barker and scored the game-tying goal, sending the game into overtime. The Hoosiers went on to beat the Spartans, 3-2. Grodek said she wouldn't be playing well without the support of her teammates.\n"They get all the hard work done," Grodek said. "I know I have to produce when they get the ball to me. I'm lucky to have them playing with me, and the team chemistry now is great. We've finally found what we've been looking for after the first few weeks."\nGrodek's recent strong play began Sept. 26 when the team beat No. 11 Ohio State, 1-0. Though she didn't score a goal or record an assist, Grodek won the majority of head balls and tackles, and was constantly helping the forwards apply pressure deep in the Ohio State zone. Lyon said the team's recent surge has been due in part to a large boost of confidence and strong play in practice.\n"Grodek's been getting great service, like the corner from Barker, which was outstanding," Lyon said. "The other part is her boost of confidence. She's winning head balls, winning tackles and maintaining possession which helps the rest of her game. What makes the team better is the competition amongst themselves in practice."\nGrodek currently leads the team in goals and points, having scored four goals totaling eight points. Zmijewski is tied for second on the team in points, having scored three goals for a total of six points. With their recent success, the Hoosiers are now 6-6-1 (3-3-1 Big Ten) and are in a good position to make a strong push for the Big Ten tournament. Senior defender Erin Hesselbach said the team is excited about its recent surge.\n"It feels really good," Hesselbach said. "We're making strides. These games have been important in Big Ten play, and it's given us a lot of confidence."\n-- Contact staff writer Cory Steger at csteger@indiana.edu.
