WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a dramatic example of the strength of the human spirit, some artists found the capacity to create their art even while held in a Nazi concentration camp. Music by four composers who were victims of Nazi persecution will be featured on two evenings next week at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Renowned physicist to lecture about brain The IU Institute for Advanced Study will present a lecture at 4 p.m., tonight, titled "The Hidden Dimensions of the Holographic Brain." The lecturer, Professor Eshel Ben Jacob, is a professor of physics at Tel Aviv University and president of the Israeli Physics Society. The presentation will cover new information discovered by the Institute for Advanced Study on epileptic brain activity and the way the brain views reality.
Each student will be charged $30 next year to bailout a $5 million athletic department deficit that is growing by $2 million a year, IU trustees decided Friday. The fee was approved for the 2004-05 school year only. By this time next year, IU President Adam Herbert said he hopes the athletic department will have developed a long term budget strategy so the fee can be dropped.
This spring the IU women's tennis team says goodbye to three seniors who have been crucial in the Hoosiers run at claiming a share of this year's Big Ten title. Seniors Martina Grimm, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran depart from Bloomington after each left her mark in the IU record book. Tran, a telecommunications major from Grand Rapids, Mich., played most of the 2004 season in the No. 2 singles position and in several different doubles combinations. Teaming with sophomore Sarah Batty, Tran climbed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's doubles national rankings to No. 26, posting a 12-1 record and going undefeated in Big Ten play. Instrumental in several of IU's biggest upsets, Tran led the IU doubles lineup in winning the doubles point against higher-ranked Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, a match which helped clinch a share of the Big Ten regular season title.
CHICAGO -- Derrek Lee is finally feeling at home with the Chicago Cubs. Lee went 5-for-5, including a three-run homer, and had five RBIs Thursday as the Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. "It was just one of those days, it seemed like every pitch I was looking for was there for me," Lee said. "I was aggressive with it and got a good swing on them and was able to get some hits. "You're not going to be able to go 5-for-5 every day. I don't think I'd ever gotten five hits before. It was a great day. It was a lot of fun out there," he said.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford will now have to work without his father at his side. Sam Alford, who has been director of basketball operations at Iowa, will end a 40-year career in college and high school coaching when he retires Aug. 1. The University made the announcement Thursday.
As graduation approaches, Cosmopolitan magazine searches for one eligible bachelor to represent each state in its November issue dedicated to America's 50 hottest men who aren't celebrities. At last count, Cosmo only received five nominees from Indiana. The magazine is looking for more candidates with its May 15 application deadline fast approaching. To be considered to represent Indiana, men must be nominated by someone other than themselves and be between the ages of 18 and 35. Nominators must send head shots and full-length photographs of their favorite bachelor, but the winners are not chosen based on looks alone.
To attend Bloomington's Lotus Festival this September, all that international music fans will need to do is drop by the local box office. But many of the musicians they want to see will have a much more difficult time getting to the event this year. The artists have run into problems in the last few months because of a new scrutiny of the type of visa they use to enter the U.S.
INDIANAPOLIS -- Former White House budget director Mitch Daniels drew on support from President Bush to easily win Indiana's GOP nomination for governor in the first gubernatorial primary of the year. Daniels, who left the Bush administration to run in Indiana, now faces Gov. Joe Kernan, a Democrat who took office in September after the death of Gov. Frank O'Bannon.

NEW YORK -- Spider-Man ads on bases didn't fly with baseball fans. A day after announcing a novel promotion to put advertisements on bases next month, Major League Baseball reversed course Thursday and eliminated that part of its marketing deal for "Spider-Man 2."
PHILADELPHIA -- St. Louis manager Tony La Russa expected a high-scoring game where the bullpens would get stretched thin. Instead, the Cardinals' relievers kept it under control. Hector Luna's three-run homer capped a five-run first inning and the Cardinals got three scoreless innings from five relievers for a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. "It looked like it would be a 12-10 game," La Russa said. "Our bullpen had a great series. This is a tough park to pitch."
The IU women's golf team began play Thursday afternoon at the NCAA Central Regional Tournament in Normal, Ill. Illinois State University and the ISU Golf Course will serve as host for the event. The Hoosiers were selected to the Regional after their strong performances in their six tournaments during the spring season. After struggling at the Central District Invitational, the Hoosiers never finished lower than No. 6 for the rest of the year, including a victory at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout in March.
As the season begins to wind down, and the academic year comes to a close, IU baseball's seniors reflect on their careers in Bloomington. For some, a shot at the pros is assured, while others would just be happy to continue playing baseball any way possible. Senior pitcher Chris Behrens said he hopes to continue playing baseball after he graduates.
The Hoosiers are looking to do what no IU softball team has done since 1996 -- earn a spot in the Big Ten tournament. It's fitting that the team's tournament chances hinge on its performance against its biggest rivals, the Purdue Boilermakers.
As the Hoosier women's water polo program wrapped up yet another successful season and look forward to next, the senior duo of Melissa Pietras and Kristy Streefkerk finished a chapter in their illustrious playing careers at IU.
