Budget higher than expected

The chancellor's office issued an incorrect figure for IU's predicted loss of revenue due to lower enrollment than expected. Originally pegged as a $7.3 million shortfall, IU-Bloomington Interim Chancellor Ken Gros Louis said the figure is actually $5.1 million, $2.2 million less than previously reported.

IU to host 3-day national Informatics conference

Prominent national and international scholars, educators and informaticians will come to IU this weekend for "Informatics: Defining the Research Agenda," a three-day conference from Sept. 10 through 12 that will define informatics, discuss its research and theorize where the field is heading in the upcoming decade.

IUSA determined to get students politically involved

The Indiana University Student Association convened Thursday to discuss new and pending concerns affecting the student government and the many students it represents. Congressional matters addressed included going over the annual budget, voting on resolutions and most importantly, hearing the various directors talk to congress on their initiatives for the upcoming year.

High Holy Days put stress on cantors

It's an overwhelming annual challenge, both musically and spiritually. For Jewish cantors, the High Holy Days are a tense time. Fashion Week descends upon New York

NEW YORK CITY -- Fashionistas descended on New York City this past Wednesday for the Spring 2005 Olympus Fashion Week. This is the second year Olympus has hosted the event, and with it, they have brought many changes. The week started off buzzing as Olympus along with coordinator Jacque Kelleher set aside room for the Olympus NCCRA auction press conference. Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the conference. He warmly greeted visitors, thanking everyone for coming to Fashion Week.

Hurricane Ivan threatens Hoosiers

If Hurricane Ivan stays away, as the IU women's soccer team hopes it does, the team will have a chance to rebound from its loss to Ball State University when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla., this weekend for the Miami Invitational. Senior Kim Grodek said last weekend's loss was tough but it also was a learning experience for the team and an opportunity to see where the team still needs work.

IU swings into fall season

Powell says killings in Sudan amounts to genocide

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration for the first time Thursday called attacks in Sudan's Darfur region by government-backed Arab militia against black Africans "genocide." The designation by Secretary of State Colin Powell came as a U.S. proposal in the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions against Sudan encountered opposition. Powell told Congress that Sudan's government is to blame for the killing of tens of thousands and uprooting of 1.2 million people.

Air strikes in 2 key areas lead crackdown

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- American warplanes struck militant positions in two insurgent-controlled cities Thursday, and U.S. and Iraqi troops quietly took control of a third city in a sweeping crackdown following a spike in attacks against U.S. forces. More than 60 people were reported killed, most of them in Tal Afar, one of several cities that American officials acknowledged this week had fallen under insurgent control and become "no-go" zones.

Hurricane Ivan devastates Grenada

After an opening season win over Central Michigan University, 41-10, the Hoosiers (1-0) take to the road and head west to face the No. 24 University of Oregon Ducks (0-0) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Playing on the road is a fact the Hoosiers will have to deal with this season, as six of their 11 games are away from Memorial Stadium.
