Goal with 13 seconds left clinches winless weekend

The University of New Mexico scored a goal with 13 seconds left to defeat IU 1-0 in double overtime to cap off a winless weekend for the No. 1 Hoosiers. This was the second time IU has fallen in double overtime on Sept. 18. Last season the Hoosiers took the field Sept. 18 in South Bend and fought their way into two overtimes before finally giving up a goal and losing the game to Notre Dame.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Last week, the IU football team forced seven turnovers from a ranked opponent at a stadium that hadn't seen a non-conference visitor win in a decade. Saturday, that same Hoosier defense was unable to capitalize on the opponents' miscues or keep them out of the end zone.

Europe defeats U.S. in Ryder Cup

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Ryder Cup won, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood raced to their boisterous fans and unfurled the European Union flag, the new symbol of dominance in these matches. They came to Oakland Hills as underdogs. They celebrated as underdogs. By now, everyone should know better. Europe again proved to be the best in the Ryder Cup with its greatest performance Sunday, handing the Americans their worst loss in the 77-year history of the matches.

Students audition for dance company

With the loss of many seniors to graduation this year, members of In-Motion are seeking new additions to their intimate dance company. Many hopefuls trickled into a dance studio at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation building Sunday to audition to be part of the student-run company.

Midwest bands rock Collins

The Collins Living and Learning Center Coffeehouse held a free concert Sunday night featuring four indie rock bands, two from Johnstown, Pa., and two from Louisville, Ky. Each band played four or five sets to a small crowd of students.

Motorcyclists get bikes blessed PORTLAND, Ind. -- Does God ride a Harley? Maybe not, but one evangelist at a motorcycle blessing ceremony says God loves people so much that he cares about their hobbies, including motorcycles. About 30 bikes were individually blessed by local church members and members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association at the Jay County Gospel Fest, located about 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

Kernan, Daniels both agree to release tax, income figures

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Joe Kernan released his state and federal income tax returns for the past four years on Friday and challenged Republican opponent Mitch Daniels to do the same. The governor said the public "has a right to know" about their financial histories. Unlike Kernan, Daniels is a multimillionaire.

Failing schools have 1 more chance

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's statewide testing that begins Monday could be the last chance for some schools to prove to the federal government they have improved several years of low scores. Ten Indiana schools must significantly improve their Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus scores. Otherwise, the federal government might force them to reopen as charter schools, replace principals and teachers or surrender to state or private management, The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday.

Ivan rainfall spurs flooding, evacuations

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Hundreds of people evacuated their homes Sunday in parts of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as rivers and small streams were swollen beyond their banks by the torrential rain dumped by remnants of Hurricane Ivan.

Israeli helicopter missile destroys car in Gaza City

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- An Israeli helicopter fired a missile at a car in Gaza City late Sunday, residents said, killing a senior Hamas militant leader. This was the latest Israeli attack in the territory it plans to leave next year.

Militants behead 3 Iraqi Kurds, threaten to execute more hostages

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Militants beheaded three hostages said to be Iraqi Kurd militiamen, showing their deaths in a video posted on a Web site Sunday and denouncing Kurdish political parties for cooperating with Americans in Iraq. In a separate incident, a group claimed to have kidnapped 18 members of the Iraqi National Guard, according to the Arabic station Al-Jazeera, which said the soldiers were threatened with death unless a detained Shiite leader is freed within 48 hours.

Why, mommy, why?

It's likely that my future unborn children will resent me for the rest of their not-yet-existent lives. But I'm OK with that because they are going to be child prodigies. I am going to live vicariously through them and they are going to like it. My mother once speculated that maybe I would be smarter if I hadn't fallen down the stairs when I was a small child. My parents seemed satisfied when I developed motor skills, but I think I should've been handed a musical instrument as soon as I emerged from the womb, if not sooner.

South Texas high school student Gerardo Garcia Jr., wants to grow a 10-inch mane then donate it to the Florida-based group Locks of Love. Locks of Love fashions wigs from the donated strands and provides the hairpieces to children who have lost hair as a result of chemotherapy.

Caveat voter

This summer, I met a politician who, when asked why he was a Republican, replied, "I just am." I pressed him to give a better answer, but he refused to say anything about fiscal spending, taxation, foreign policy, personal freedom or even something as simplistic as "Democrats suck." Instead, he seemed to believe that Republicanism is a state of being rather than a voluntary party affiliation. Given the partisan and ideological absolutism many Americans display in modern political discourse, maybe he's right.

Whirling Dervishes demonstrate Turkish tradition

Saturday night, the Whirling Dervishes of Rumi performed the revolving Sema ritual to a packed house at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater as part of the Lotus Festival, the international music festival that drew a numerous spectators and world renowned artists to Bloomington this weekend.

IU hosts conference on India studies programs

IU-Bloomington played host to the first-ever two-day India studies conference on the state of India Studies in the United States Wednesday and Thursday. The program was held in the Maple Room of the Indiana Memorial Union and saw some of the leading American and Indian academics and scholars.
