Professor reveals solutions to flooding

It didn't have to rain 40 days and 40 nights to flood Germany's Elbe River in August 2002. It only had to rain a little more than 40 hours to kill more than 100 people across the continent, and cause more than 9 billion euros in damage to Germany alone.

Departments plan annual science career fair The annual Biology & Chemistry Career Day will present representatives from companies such as Baxter Pharmaceutical, Cook Group Incorporated, Procter & Gamble and many others. The companies will be on hand to meet with students and discuss potential job openings. Sponsored by the Biology Academic Advising Office and the Career Development Center/Arts & Sciences Career Services, the event is designed to help students get jobs or internships.

Hispanic fraternity discusses migration

Empathetic sharing was orchestrated within the campus community Monday as about a dozen IU students convened at the La Casa Latino Cultural Center to explore the difficult assimilation process of Puerto Rican migrants into mainstream American culture. The brothers of Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity held a night of education and comedy about common Puerto Rican interpretations of their arrival in New York City, capped off with free pizza during the viewing of the film "La Guagua aérea" -- A Flight of Hope.

Custodians go above and beyond

Sharon Holtsclaw cleans bathrooms for a living, as she has for 24 years. A custodian at Collins Center, Holtsclaw represents one of the reported 130 undergraduate dorm custodians who spend eight hours a day, five days a week cleaning up after students. From the daily sweeping of littered hallways to what she refers to as cleaning a dump in a stairway at Read Center every day for six weeks, Holtsclaw has seen it all.

It's happening every second -- cells die and rejuvenate; cuts and bruises heal; and the body is absorbed back into the earth after death, adding nutrients to the soil that allow other things to live. Because you're going to lose them someday anyway, Susan Buzan wants as many parts of your body as you can spare.

State revenue tops September target by $12.6 million INDIANAPOLIS -- State revenues in September came in $12.6 million, or 1.2 percent, above projections, officials said Monday. That report puts state revenues for the first three months of the 2005 budget year at $44.5 million more than was forecast.

United Way readies for community service

The Monroe County United Way is motivated for the 2005 campaign year. Under new leadership, the nonprofit agency is setting its goals high for the betterment of Monroe County's community. It is the mission of United Way Community Services to "improve people's lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community," said Barry Lessow, the new executive director for Monroe County United Way.

County candidates discuss key issues at open forum

Monroe County candidates debated issues such as health care, the homeless situation and overcrowded jails at a public forum Monday evening at the United Methodist Church of Bloomington. Candidates for commissioner, county council, auditor and judges spoke in front of the public and discussed important issues.

Among all of the other issues to which it must attend, the NCAA must now play babysitter. The Stetson University athletics department and the University of Louisiana at Monroe athletics department were both placed on probation earlier this week for unethical practices regarding their recruitment of athletes. Sex, drugs and alcohol should have no place in the recruiting of athletes for college sports programs.

God can't speak Spanish

Dora the Explorer just isn't enough. You know, the big-headed Latin cartoon girl who speaks Spanglish to a monkey on Nickelodeon. I love that show (not that I watch it or anything). It teaches little kids to be bilingual, which is great. But what's not so great is that it's just about the only Spanish-language show in Bloomington. And there's a chance this could be a symptom of a language prejudice, the belief that everyone should speak English.

Last Thursday as I trudged to campus for my marathon of classes, I was suddenly struck by a major wave of anxiety. I realized I had left my most important school supply at home: my cell phone. I know what you're thinking: "Poor brat can't be without her precious cell phone for a day." But that's not true at all. Of course I can be without my cell phone, I just don't want to.

Students choose between paid, unpaid internships

However, the question of taking a paid or unpaid internship often arises. Kris Mathes, a promotions intern for Emmis Communications' WNOU 93.1 in Indianapolis, felt his unpaid internship was beneficial for his future career.
