Heart disease blamed in death

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Thomas Herrion had heart disease and showed evidence of previous heart trouble when he collapsed and died after a preseason game last month, an official in the Denver County coroner's office said Tuesday.

Greek houses experience technology problems

Club team finally coming full swing

Junior Matt Ostrega's vision of an IU club baseball team, and ten months of hard work creating one, will come to fruition Tuesday. Club baseball, for the most part, is similar to that of IU's varsity baseball team. Like college ball, the team carries 25 to 30 players on its traveling roster, plays other college clubs and is open to all full-time students.

Club offers runners forum to compete

Running alone last year was no fun for senior Ben Bartley. He was discouraged because although IU has well-respected and experienced track and cross-country teams, there was no organization for students who wanted to run for fun. Some students who wanted to learn proper training techniques of running and to have a forum to compete had nowhere to turn. Bartley and junior Jacqui Davis decided to do something about it.

Team attracts riders with animals

Hurricane washes out the Green Wave

DALLAS - Tulane athletic teams displaced from their New Orleans campus by Hurricane Katrina will be based this fall at five different universities. The Green Wave student-athletes will live and attend classes at schools in Texas and Louisiana. The teams will stay together and play under the Tulane banner.

Porter grabs 2 picks in 41-10 win

Sept. 6, 2004 Similar to this past weekend, the IU football and men's soccer teams each start off their seasons in grand fashion. Freshman cornerback Tracy Porter leads the football team to a 41-10 win with two interceptions, including one he returned for a 96-yard touchdown. On the soccer field, junior midfielder Brian Plotkin plays an integral offensive role as IU wins both of its weekend matches.

Building diversity on the Opinion page

The first place most people turn to when they first open up the Indiana Daily Student is usually the comics page. After asking their friends for all of the answers to the crossword puzzle and deciphering exactly what their horoscope means, people usually turn to the Sports or Opinion pages. People love reading the Sports and Opinion pages for the columns. They love to hear what columnists say and to argue with people's opinions. But before readers take in our well-crafted editorials, they look at the mug shots -- and I hate to use a cliché, but a picture is worth a thousand words. When I was a freshman flipping through the Opinion page, I always wanted to read the columns of people who looked nice. I would think to myself, "He looks like a creep, I'm not going to read that," or "She looks dumb, I'll skip this one." Pictures color our judgment and one criticism the IDS constantly receives about our columnists is their lack of diversity as a group. This is an issue that can turn away readers.

IU smoking study halted after breach

A study performed on smokers by IU researchers has been temporarily suspended after it was discovered some subjects' names and addresses had been compromised. Led by the IU Psychology Department, it is thought to be the longest-running U.S. study of smoking behaviors in the same subject. The study tracked teens through adulthood and followed up on their smoking habits. It began in 1980 and surveyed 8,500 students in Monroe County middle and high schools. The IU researchers continually kept in contact with the students through adult-hood with many follow-up surveys.

Pannozzo nets Big Ten award; team gets transfer

It didn't take long for senior linebacker John Pannozzo to accommodate himself to a new position. The Hoosiers' middle linebacker was named Big Ten defensive player of the week after his performance against Central Michigan Saturday. Last season, Pannozzo started at fullback for the Hoosiers; however, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner was so impressed with the linebacker's special teams play that he decided to move him to linebacker.

Italian museum seeks to protect art

ROME -- Italy has installed more metal detectors and X-ray machines as part of stepped-up security at cultural sites to protect its artistic treasures from terrorist attacks, the culture minister said Tuesday.

Southern Indiana church faces drastic restoration

JASPER, Ind. -- In March, metal webs of scaffolding rose nearly 90 feet to the top of the dome of the Monastery Immaculate Conception church. The interior renovation of the 80-year-old-plus church was under way. Delicate painting brought out details never before seen. Painstakingly, artists accented columns with gold leaf. Now the scaffolding is gone and the $7 million interior and exterior renovation is finished.

Kanye's conspiracy

Kanye West caused quite a stir this weekend during Friday's NBC telethon for victims of Hurricane Katrina when he suggested the federal government had been slow to deal with the crisis because "George Bush doesn't care about black people." NBC quickly cut away from him and edited his remarks out of the telethon's West Coast showing, prompting the next day's Los Angeles Times to opine that "the network violated the most moving and essential moment in an otherwise sterile, self-serving corporate broadcast" (Sept. 4).

Actor Bob Denver, TV's Gilligan, dead at 70

LOS ANGELES -- Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Supreme Court nominations 'wide open'

WASHINGTON -- President Bush said the list of possibilities for his second Supreme Court nomination was "wide open" Tuesday as Senate Republicans urged him to consider a woman and Democrats pressed him to consult with them before making his next pick.
