PHA discourages 'facebooking' pledges

Students planning to participate in women's recruitment this year should think twice before requesting friends on Facebook.com during the next few months. Recruitment directors from IU's sorority chapters and executive board members of the Panhellenic Association agreed in a recent meeting to discourage current sorority members from accepting friends and messages from potential pledges, said Zeta Tau Alpha recruitment chair Johnna Kingery. "It sounds like a flashy idea but it's pretty basic and simple," said senior Jaclyn Reinking, PHA's executive vice president of recruitment.

David Spade to perform stand-up at IU

College students nationwide can work on perfecting sarcastic one-liners to use on friends, but nobody has the zinger down to a science like David Spade. Spade, the ubiquitous comedian who has written, produced and starred in countless television shows and movies in his 20-year career, will perform at the IU Auditorium Saturday to kick off the 2005-2006 season.

Asian Culture Center hosts Moon Festival

According to one Chinese legend, "marriages are made in Heaven but prepared on the moon." To increase her chances for marriage, a young woman might pray to the old man on the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival, or the Moon Festival as it is sometimes known, is to celebrate the harvest and give thanks for family, according to the China Voc Web site.

Comic book exhibit opens at Lilly

To the bat cave! Well, to the Lilly Library at least, where currently everyone can go hang out with all their favorite heroes and humorous casts of characters. People have been visiting the bat cave for years, along with special places like Metropolis, Mars or Haverville High.

Our excitement upon learning that our first assignment was the newly opened Chipotle on Kirkwood Avenue was hard to contain. Neither of us had eaten at the Mexican restaurant before, but the buzz surrounding it was difficult to ignore. On a peaceful Friday night, we decided to venture down Kirkwood to try it for ourselves.

Jackson should pick better scripts

Samuel L. Jackson seems to be one of those actors who cannot seem to turn down work. His repertoire is large and extremely diverse, and while I think this work ethic is noble and probably a lot of fun (not to mention all those paychecks), I think sometimes he may go too far.

'Murderball' on a roll

If anything, go to see the chair. Made of aluminum beaten and molded together like something out of medieval times, the wheels are angled and ready for war. Murderball, also known as Quad Rugby or Wheelchair Rugby, is not a game for the timid. Smashing into your opponent at full speed and firing across the court with a ball, the aim of the game is to get both wheels on the other side of the line.

It is the story of Jean Gilkyson (Jennifer Lopez) who, in an attempt to escape an abusive relationship, flees to Montana with her daughter Griff (Becca Gardener).

The Exorcist on Trial

Why do the Rolling Stones even make albums anymore? When a band's creative powers have been near death for 25 years, maybe it's time to call it quits on the recording, and just be comfortable selling out stadiums and being sponsored by Ameriquest. For the past couple of decades the Stones have consistently made mediocre albums that in no way measure up to their 60s and early 70s heyday. Their newest effort, A Bigger Bang, is no different.

Festival kicks off relief effort

The IU Hurricane Katrina Student Relief Program will continue its fund-raising efforts with a festival beginning at 3 p.m. Friday in Dunn Meadow. The event will feature local musical performances, raffle prizes, dinner and educational booths from student organizations, with all proceeds being donated for hurricane relief.
