Lupe Fiasco disappoints

I’m writing this with the slimmest of hope that Lupe Fiasco himself might get a chance to hear what I have to say about the show I just saw at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Winter of discontent

2008 proffered an unusually harsh spring in Indiana, and I think we both know I’m not talking about the freeze that didn’t lift til May. No, Hoosier nation was in a well-documented tailspin that began slowly last October and took off like a bell curve in April.Such was the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of Crean.Guess what, kids? It’s not summer anymore.Sure, the solstice technically comes Sept. 22. But summer ends on Labor Day, and the IU basketball team’s era of good feelings came to a halt this afternoon with the announcement of the Big Ten schedule, soon followed by IU’s own 2008-2009 slate.

Women should take a stand

As many newspapers are reporting, including the Indiana Daily Student, it is well known that John McCain chose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in the hopes that women and some democrats would vote for her just because she is a woman. This is why I feel a need to write about this. I am hurt and scared for the women of this country because I am now realizing the type of world we live in. For so long white men have run this country and have been in charge of the rights of the people, especially of women. So to assume that women are too stupid to look beyond their own gender is appalling. We are supposedly living in a world where women and men are equal; however, what is happening in 2008 only proves that this is not the case.

Walk really was for workers

I would like to respond to your Sept. 2 editorial regarding the 37.4 mile “Walk for Workers” I completed through my district this past Saturday. While I respect the editorial board’s opinion, I must strongly disagree with their take on my motives. After walking 37 miles in honor of the working men and women of my district affected by job loss, I can say with certitude that this was no “stunt.” I would also state that anyone there during the more than 12 hours I spent on my feet would say the same – especially those affected by these job cuts in recent months.

Longing for political diversity

Hate incident count up by 4 in Bloomington

The City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission recently released its annual report, which stated 29 hate incidents occurred between July 2007 and June 2008. In the previous report, 25 incidents were cited.
