Ugly performance plagues Hoosiers

With 3:34 to go in Thursday night’s game at Crisler Arena, Michigan claimed a 57-45 lead. The Wolverines finished the contest on a 12-0 run, but by then it made no difference.

Hoosiers prepare for Gophers after loss

When IU coach Tom Crean called a time out with 12:26 left in the second half and his team down 38-29, the Michigan pep band began playing Otis Redding’s “Respect.” On Thursday, it was the Wolverines who deserved the song, handily beating the Hoosiers 69-45 and avenging a 71-65 loss on Dec. 31.

Lecture addresses study of anti-Semitism

Thursday inaugurated IU’s Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism. The institute is the second of its kind established in the U.S. and will be used as a base for research. Additionally, it will seek to illustrate the causes and consequences of antisemitism.

Workshop aims to teach student communication

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, AGEP will hold this year’s workshop – which focuses on effective communication – in the Oak Room at the Indiana Memorial Union. According to its Web site, AGEP is a national science foundation that focuses on increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and U.S. citizens who obtain graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

Hopes remain for Cleveland Orchestra’s IU performance

The Cleveland Orchestra, one of the country’s premier symphonic ensembles, is scheduled to take up residency at the IU Auditorium Jan. 18–20. The residency, sponsored in part by the Jacobs School of Music, will cap off the three-day educational experience with a concert. Students from the music school will have the opportunity to work with various members of the orchestra, including conductor Franz Welser-Möst.

Child locked out of home

A 3-year-old girl is now in custody after being locked outside of an apartment Wednesday in the 500 block of Basswood Drive.

Dalai Lama’s upcoming visit to Bloomington will be provided. The public is welcome to attend. Please bring canned or packaged food to donate to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank in support of the Interfaith Hunger Initiative. Absentees can vote thanks to new House bill

INDIANAPOLIS – Legislation that would allow Indiana voters to cast absentee ballots by mail without having an excuse, such as being out of town on Election Day, is now before the state Senate.

Police find drugs and shotgun

When officers entered, they smelled burning marijuana coming from the back bedroom of the apartment. They found $247 in cash and multiple clear plastic bags of a substance believed to be marijuana on his person. A notebook, which appeared to be a pay sheet, was also discovered.

General Assembly has beer on the brain

Despite a slew of alcohol law reform bills on the Indiana General Assembly’s menu, it doesn’t appear the state will be any closer to legalizing the sale of alcohol from stores on Sundays by the time the Indiana Legislature adjourns in mid-March.
