Pulitzer winner Burns: Journalism not about fame

Journalist John F. Burns saw his name on a marquee for the first time on Monday. However, he said journalism shouldn’t be about becoming famous or seeing your name on a marquee. Instead, he said, people going into the profession should stay true themselves and their reasons for going into journalism.

New vice president for research announced

IU President Michael McRobbie announced Jorge José as the selection for the University’s vice president for research Monday. The selection will be subject to approval by the IU board of trustees and the board will decide by May 8.

With curly brown hair and a smile, Abbey Stemler was difficult to distinguish from any other student sitting at Starbucks in the Indiana Memorial Union. A graduate student at Maurer School of Law and the Kelley School of Business, Stemler has been fully involved in administrative decision-making procedures since she was appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels as student trustee last year.

IU on road for in-state matchup

The IU softball team (6-19) travels to Indiana State (11-12) today, looking to end its current 10-game slump. The Hoosiers last played and defeated the Sycamores 5-4 on March 26, 2009.

Making sense of the madness

Hopefully those of us making predictions for this weekend’s Final Four matchups will fare a little better than we have up to this point. According to ESPN, roughly 200 out of 4.8 million brackets in the network’s bracket challenge correctly selected all four teams playing this weekend. Keeping our fingers crossed, let’s take a look at the games slated for Saturday.

Anya Peterson Royce, Chancellor’s Professor of Anthropology, was named Faculty Member of the Year, and Jeanne Madison, director of the Lifelong Learning Program at IU-Bloomington Continuing Studies, was named Professional Staff Member of the Year.

Garden plots allow RPS residents to grow own produce

Spring is here. The chipmunks are coming out of their burrows, crocuses are pushing their fragile heads into the pale March sunlight and IU’s gardeners are ready to get their fingers green. That’s because Residential Programs and Services has just opened its campus garden allotments to students. The plots, located near the water tower on the East State Road 46 bypass, are part of the office’s strategy to create green spaces. Forty plots are available, each measuring 11” by 11”, at a cost of $25.

New petition alleges IUSA Funding Board violates bylaws

A petition for injunctive relief regarding the IU Student Association Funding Board will be heard by the Student Body Supreme Court at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The location will be posted on the court’s Web site prior to the hearing.

The Musical Arts Center, Auer Hall, Ford-Crawford Hall and Recital Hall are home to many performances for Jacobs School of Music students, faculty and guest artists. But with more than 1,100 performances annually, some believe the school is just running out of space.

Indiana joins lawsuit against health care
