Local salons, pet groomers send hair to help with oil spill in Gulf of Mexico

Hair salons and pet grooming facilities across the nation have been collecting hair clippings to send to the Gulf of Mexico to help absorb oil from the hazardous tank explosion that occurred April 20. Bloomington is no exception.After receiving the hair, volunteers stuff it into nylon stockings, which are then tied together to make “brooms” that surround and contain sections of the gulf while soaking up oil.

Developmental disability services in Indiana face budget cuts

Services for people with developmental disabilities across the state of Indiana will soon be affected by budget cuts. Three local agencies serving people with developmental disabilities, Options, Stone Belt and Christole, Inc., have announced that steep budget cuts are affecting about 905 staff members and 2,500 consumers in Monroe County, said Susan Rinne, chief executive officer and executive director of Options.

Friends remember Becca Lanter's positivity

Lanter, a 21-year-old senior, was killed in a collision early Saturday morning when her car hit a tree. In celebration of Lanter’s life, a memorial service will take place 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Student Recreational Sports Center, where Lanter worked for three years.

Hureau named Rookie of the Year

IU missed out on Walter Offutt last weekend and this week decided to not pursue Tennessee transfer Emmanuel Negedu. Negedu suffered from cardiac arrest while working out at Tennessee and sat out the 2009-10 season. After Tennessee doctors refused to clear him, he decided to transfer.

Indiana air begins to clear of harmful smog

Governor Mitch Daniels announced April 30 that all 92 counties in Indiana met federal air quality standards for the first time in the state’s history. After they were labeled as “nonattainment” areas, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management focused on Lake and Porter counties to help implement new air quality standards so they could meet the federal requirements, said Rob Elstro, public information officer for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
