Spring game exceeds Glass’ expectations

Heading into this year’s Cream and Crimson Spring Game, IU Athletics Director Fred Glass said he wouldn’t measure success by the number of people in the stands.  He had no hard numbers to compare it to — because previous administrations didn’t count attendance — but Glass said the turnout was obviously better than it normally was, and he’s ecstatic to see 5,325 people in the stands.

In last practice until August, Crimson wins error-filled game vs. Cream, 17-10

A record 5,325 fans traveled to Memorial Stadium for the annual Cream and Crimson Spring Game on Saturday. But if they were looking for mistake-free football, they went to the wrong place. Seven total turnovers and nine punts highlighted Crimson’s 17-10 victory, something IU coach Bill Lynch attributed to the divided nature of a spring game.

For the second-straight season, the IU Athletics Department is asking Hoosier football fans to design a T-shirt for the Memorial Stadium student section. This year, though, they have an official name to work with.

Notre Dame recruit dies from drunken fall

A “drunk and belligerent” 17-year-old Notre Dame football recruit was killed in a fall from a fifth-floor hotel balcony during his senior-year spring break in Florida, authorities said Saturday.

New-look Hoosiers begin spring practice

When the IU football team trains before and during the 2010 season, the players will wear workout shirts with the word “finish” scrawled in large letters across the back. But before the Hoosiers can finish, they’ll have to start. With spring practice kicking off today, IU coach Bill Lynch said at his press conference he is excited for new beginnings at Memorial Stadium.

Off-field problems persist for Michigan State football team

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Former Michigan State running back Glenn Winston has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and a year of probation for his role in a Nov. 22 fight with members of a campus fraternity.

Attendance increase major step for IU

By the end of the 2009 season, the IU football team had only won one more game than it had in the previous year, going 4-8. The team lost to Purdue again. It finished at the bottom of the Big Ten again. It was the second-worst team in at-home attendance in the Big Ten again. But maybe that last fact isn’t as clear-cut as it seems. Home attendance increased by an average of more than 10,051 fans per game, the third-largest increase in the nation.

Bobby Johnson to join Buffalo Bills staff

IU football offensive-line coach Bobby Johnson is leaving his position to take a job as assistant offensive line coach with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, a source close to the situation confirmed.

Lynch introduces 2010 recruiting class

Recruiting is a matter of perspective for the IU coaching staff. While national scouting services rank IU’s 2010 signing class at the bottom of the Big Ten, Hoosier coach Bill Lynch welcomed the 25-member class on National Signing Day on Wednesday saying he felt very comfortable with his new recruits.

Kelly says he'll talk to Notre Dame
