Value of line discussed in lecture

Lara Nguyen, a fundamental drawing professor in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, lectured Wednesday on the descriptive and emotive qualities of line in a new collection of drawings. The exhibition consisted of drawings from the August L. and L. Tommie Freundlich Collection, titled “The Great American Sketchbook.”

Local group Jip Jop reflects on influences, origins

A conglomeration of styles definable by an excess of genre titles, local late-night musical sensation Jip Jop features technically-versed musicians trained by the Jacobs School of Music and influenced by old-school cassettes. Frontman Ben Gershman holds it down with concise, percussive rapping, spitting words faster than a clicking bicycle gear, with seamless transitions to melodic singing smoother than syrup. Ryan Imboden on trumpet and Davis Jones on saxophone come together to form the horn section, while the rhythm section is composed of Bobby Wooten on the five-stringed bass and Matt Margeson on the kit. Ben Bolasny on keys applies years of classical and jazz expertise to pull the whole orchestration together for local bar appearances and house parties.

Soul music rings out at Buskirk-Chumley

The IU Soul Revue was greeted with an explosive standing ovation by the crowded Buskirk-Chumley Theater Saturday. Tyron Cooper, interim director of Soul Revue, worked the crowd as Soul Revue rocked its way through the performance with heavy instrumentals, a slow-motion movement sequence and dark hazy mood lighting.

The theme of Soul Revue’s performance is “Soul Speaks,” which signifies the ways in which black popular music has always been a voice of commentary in regards to the societal circumstances of African-Americans.
