After sitting vacant for two years, the 26,000-plus square foot barn and a property just shy of nine acres fell into the hands of Brandi Williams in July 2023. Once home to a Bloomington equestrian center, she had a vision for the property to transform into Solidago Acres, a home for farm-to-table food access and gathering for the Bloomington community.

I’m from Indiana, so I know firsthand why people think the Midwest of the United States can be passed up. Some people will tell you they can’t even distinguish between all of the “I” states – Iowa, Indiana, Illinois — so why stop here? I’m tired of seeing Instagram post after Instagram post slam the Midwest as a flyover country. In the heartland, you’ll find more than cornfields and windmills. Woven within the crossroads are great cities, delicious food, interesting attractions and friendly faces.

On a visit to the Indiana Statehouse, visitors might marvel at the limestone columns, stained glass windows and murals. Perhaps they’ll see the governor on his way to a press conference or meeting. They may even spot a government employee — clad in business attire — with a handgun tucked into their waistband. Does that last image seem impossible? Think again. Judges, police officers, members of the legislature and their staff have been permitted to carry firearms in the State House since 2017. Now, a new bill seeks to expand that right.

About a year ago, Daixuan Ai, a doctoral composition student at the Jacobs School of Music, had just read about a racially motivated attack on an IU freshman in the New York Times. An 18-year-old Asian student was getting off a Bloomington transit bus Jan. 11, 2023, when Billie R. Davis, a 56-year-old Bloomington woman, rushed at her and stabbed her seven times in the head, leaving visible puncture marks. Davis told authorities she had stabbed the student because she was Asian.
