The softball rivalry between Indiana and Purdue continued to intensify as they faced each other for the third time this season in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. With a win-or-go-home scenario, the stakes were high and the pressure was on.

Last season, Indiana softball faced Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Despite the game slipping from Indiana’s grasp — a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh vanished when Northwestern scored two runs to snatch the championship — the Hoosiers have not let that loss define them. Instead, it has fueled their determination and set the stage for a comeback this season.

The center field at Andy Mohr Field looked different. This time, it had the IU trident inside the Hoosier state with numbers 2, 6, 7 and 25 surrounding it. Each number honored Indiana softball’s four seniors with their jersey number.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hoosiers looked to make magic happen and were in a challenging position. Junior pitcher and utility player Brianna Copeland got a powerful base hit straight up the field, but the offense could not execute. The loss snapped the team's eight-game win streak.

Before the start of Indiana softball’s series against Minnesota, head coach Shonda Stanton gave out boxes of Hot Tamales in the clubhouse. Minnesota entered with a six-game win streak and the second-best batting average in the Big Ten.

As the home plate umpire raised his right fist signaling strike three, junior outfielder Taylor Minnick tossed her bat in front of her with her head down. The Michigan Wolverines were jumping up and down on Andy Mohr Field.

Going into Tuesday night’s game, Indiana softball looked to get back in the win column, as it had been stuck in a rut for the past five games. However, Team 51 looked like its usual self in Louisville, Kentucky, when it took on the University of Louisville in a midweek matchup.

After tumbling in two straight games against No. 10 University of Florida during the Florida Tournament on March 16-17, the Hoosiers were looking for a fresh start over the weekend. Team 51 opened Big Ten in a matchup against Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania. But the Hoosiers got the opposite of a fresh start, ending the weekend now on a five-game losing streak.

Indiana softball returned to Florida for a midweek game March 13 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Then, the Hoosiers headed to Gainesville, for the Florida Tournament over the weekend. In the Sunshine State, Team 51 went 3-2, with two losses during challenging games against No. 10 University of Florida.

Indiana softball hosted the Hoosier Classic at Andy Mohr Field in Bloomington from March 1 – 3. It was a successful home-opening weekend for Team 51 as they went 4-0 in the tournament, displaying a full team effort and the depth in their dugout.

Indiana softball headed out to the desert to participate in the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, for another five-game set Feb. 23-25. The Hoosiers won against Central Michigan University, Drake University and Marshall University, but lost twice to the invitational’s host, No. 17 University of Arizona.

Indiana softball competed in its second tournament of the season Feb. 16–18 at the Troy Invitational in Troy, Alabama. Team 51 went 4-1, defeating Florida A&M University and Troy University twice while falling to Gardner-Webb University.

Indiana softball traveled down to Clearwater, Florida, for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic to start Team 51’s season. The Hoosiers went 4-1 with one loss due to a tight battle against No. 5 Clemson University.

Over the summer, NBA commissioner Adam Silver officially announced the inaugural In-Season Tournament, beginning with the 2023-2024 NBA season. Fans speculated at the end of last season that a tournament would be created. But since Silver’s official announcement, it left players and fans wanting clarification about how it works.

The Indiana men’s swim and dive team will compete in a tri-meet against the University of Missouri and Auburn University at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Missouri.
