After cycling through my iTunes library and stumbling once again upon Paper Diamonds' first EP, "Levitate," I was overcome with nostalgia. When I heard last year that popular Boulder, Colorado producer,Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) had created his own record label (PL Music), I immediately rushed to his site to get the scoop. I came across a new Colorado artist known as Paper Diamond, and what I heard exceeded my expectations.
Unfortunately, it seems that with a simple computer anyone can create sounds and it becomes harder to filter through the bog of electronic songs. Between the endless number of remixes on YouTube, the popular Garage Band, and the ease of file sharing, it is as if our standards, musically speaking, are being lowered. There are, though, a few artists that manage to emerge based on their individuality and unique, refreshing sound.
Alex B aka Paper Diamond adds fresh perspective to the electronic music game by reminding his audience that you don't always need to be "womped" to death to feel the music in your veins. His music is mellow and catchy but still contains upbeat rhythms. The synths are airy, especially in songs like "Levitate", naturally, but the music still is capable of keeping you bouncing. You would not expect less from an artist on the Pretty Lights record label. Check him out at The Bluebird on North Walnut on the 25th.
