Merrill Garbus, facepaint wearing, glass bottle banging, ukulele shredding singer-songwriter of uber-curious indie group tUnE-yArDs, is returning to Bloomington to showcase music off her April breakout album, w h o k i l l. Tomorrow night, she'll headline at Rhino's with touring buddy Pat Jordache and local favorites Sleeping Bag. Garbus exploded out of her shell this year when critics drooled over w h o k i l l and its fearless, inventive, and impressively unfamiliar sounds. It's a remarkably bold style that's more difficult to pigeonhole into words than quite possibly anything else I've listened to in the past year or so, but since it's my job to try: a psychedelic and extremely personal hybrid of layered vocal loops, sporadic strings and brass, makeshift percussion, and notably melodic bass lines. See for yourself below in Garbus' self-directed video for fan favorite "Gangsta," released yesterday.
