Chicago jazz improvisationalist Joe McPhee never picked up a saxophone until the late 60's, sometime around his 30th birthday, but age is just a number. Having performed saxophone and trumpet professionally for six separate decades now, he remains at the forefront of this country's avant-garde jazz scene as one of its most respected veterans. His wingmen, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and drummer Michael Zerang who now collectively go by Joe McPhee's Survival Unit III, will join him Friday night on The Bishop's stage.
