An occasion to create a crafty costume isn't a one-a-year kind of thing in Bloomington. Boxcar Book's annual Rock and Roll Prom gives us cause to rummage through thrift stores and craft outlets in search of the perfect costume.
As with Halloween, prom is just better when you do it yourself. Here are a few ideas on how to get more creative than just sticking your head into a mask. If you're going to be judged by a bunch of roller-girls, you know you better bring it.
A few crazy add-ons can turn any outfit into an alien costume. Silver spray paint can be used on leggings for a metallic second skin and overalls can be painted to turn them into a jumpsuit.

Sequined or brightly colored fabric from a local craft store and a few safety pins can be used to create a wrap dress. Neon body paint and glitter are a must, and if you're feeling really daring, a spray painted rubber swim cap can give you temporary alien alopecia.

To look like a Space Cadet fresh out of a Kubrick film, something shiny and all-white will do the trick. Space age sunglasses like ones with tennis ball shaped lenses complete the look.
A local thrift store is a great place to start looking if you're a little less hands on. Short Mod dresses from the 1960's have a space age feel. Cactus Flower on Kirkwood has a wide selection of dresses from this decade.
Anyone can come up with something more creative than wrapping themselves in aluminum foil. Whether you decide to be an extraterrestrial or an astronaut, a few crafty touches will make your outfit out of this world.
All other photos thanks to google image results for "space age fashion" of course!
