It's been a great year for me, as I hope it has been for the rest of you. I tend to be sentimental and reflective, so that's why I've compiled this list of the most defining moments of my year.

Favorite Album

Why? : Alopecia

This album is hard to place into a single category, but I can definitely say it was my favorite album of 2008. From the utilization of jingling change as a beat to the lyric, "You're the only proper noun I need," this album is simply fantastic.

Favorite Song

Department of Eagles: "No one Does it Like You"

It's pretty much impossible to choose just one song for an entire year, but I can't stop listening to this. It's simplistic and lush, and I love it.

Favorite Live Show

The Elephant Six Surprise Tour

The show was originally sold out and I thought that I wasn't going to be able to attend. However, they changed the venue at the last minute from The Cinemat to Rhino's. This lead me to witness Jeff Mangum's incredible performance of "Engine" to a silent crowd, as well as the spontaneity and sincerity that is Elephant Six. To finish off a spectacular night of music, my friends and I stayed until Rhino's closed and hung out with the bands. They even explained to us the mechanics behind that giant metronome that graced the stage.

Check out Live Buzz's blog all about the show here.

Favorite Online Discovery

The Blog: You Ain't No Picasso

The creator hails from Kentucky, and his website constantly features fantastic tunes. I've found a lot of new music to love on, plus I love his style of writing.

Favorite Moment in Politics

History was made on Nov. 4th, when Barack Obama became the first African-American to win the presidency. I was really happy to see this change, and felt the first tinge of patriotism I'd felt in years.

Favorite Item of Clothing

I'm going to be honest, I'm really glad flannel was brought back. Grunge is great.

Favorite Activity

I started DJing with my friend Allison last semester at WIUX. I never thought I'd have my own radio show and it's so much fun to get underrated music heard.

Hopefully 2009 will be as fantastic as 2008.

Cheers,

Katie
