Best still alive in Big Ten women's semis

So much for my prediction of the Big Ten Tournament being jumbled, at least with the top four teams. The tournament's top four seeds made it safely through the quarterfinals and will battle for the right to play in the championship game tomorrow. The first game begins at 5 p.m.

IU Outduels ISU in Tennessee

In the opening game of the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn., IU and Illinois State would trade punches several times before the Hoosiers would hold on to win it by a score of 6-4. The Hoosiers got ahead early in the first inning.

Devan Dumes, Tijan Jobe and Steven Gambles will be honored on Senior Day on Saturday. Also graduating is redshirt junior Brett Finkelmeier, a walk-on who joined the team while Kelvin Sampson was coaching. Hoosiers fall to Illinois in first round, 59-53

The IU women's basketball team won both games against Illinois in the regular season. However, it wasn't meant to be in the meeting that mattered most. The Hoosiers (14-16, 7-12) overcame a sloppy offensive performance and nearly pulled off an improbable comeback before falling to the Fighting Illini (16-13, 8-11) in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. "We wanted that game so bad," IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack said.

Men's basketball Senior Day at noon on Saturday

IU will face Northwestern at noon on Saturday in what will be the final game at Assembly Hall for Tijan Jobe, Devan Dumes, Steven Gambles and Brett Finkelmeier. Finkelmeier is technically a redshirt junior and thus a senior by academic standards. The players will be honored after the game, which is likely to include the annual Senior Day speeches.

Hoosiers lack physicality in 74-55 loss

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Regardless of the odds it faced in the past two seasons, this Hoosier squad never seemed intimidated. That changed Wednesday during the first trip to West Lafayette, Ind., of Tom Crean's era as coach in a 74-55 loss. The performance didn't hinge on the fans' screams of "IU sucks" or its chants of "Boiler up." This was not about the atmosphere. A stronger Purdue team bullied IU and pushed it around the court on both ends of the floor.

Purdue still tough without Hummel -- see Michigan State game

In its latest loss against Michigan State, Purdue played without Hummel's direction for the first time this season. He stood only for timeouts and walked to meet his teammates on crutches. As he watched, dressed in a blue shirt and tie, Purdue struggled to score the ball. It was obvious that Hummel was missed outside, with Purdue shooting 2-of-9 from the 3-point line.

Crean talks freshman forwards

With the team already up in West Lafayette, we received some quotes from IU coach Tom Crean. One thing Crean addressed was the growth of his three 6-foot-9 freshmen forwards: Christian Watford, Derek Elston and Bobby Capobianco. Considering IU has no big men locked up for 2010, this trio is critical to the Hoosiers going forward: There are three freshmen in Bobby, Derek and Christian that are on that front line that are making progress.

IU football hires Carmel HS coach

IU hired Myron "Mo" Moriarty as its new offensive line coach today. Moriarty replaces Bobby Johnson, who took an assistant offfensive line coaching position with the Buffalo Bills. Moriarty coached Carmel (Ind.) HS for the past five seasons, which included a 2007 state championship and four consecutive state finals appearances. Moriarty previously worked on the Hoosiers' staff as the tight ends coach from 2002-04, and coached Bloomington South High School from 1987-2001. See the full release below the jump.
