What a day to start to the IDS basketball blog! We hear IU just picked up a relatively heralded recruit - anyone else hear that?
Yes, today is the perfect day to begin our humble little operation. Not only is tonight the official start of the 2006-07 basketball season, but reports are breaking that Eric Gordon Jr., ranked by Rivals.com as the second-best player in th 2007 class, is headed to IU.
IU fans are excited. We'll pretend this blog is the reason why.
Anyway, this is the inaugural post, so it's best, we imagine, to provide you with a little background and an idea of what we plan to do here.
We, your loyal bloggers, are also your loyal IDS basketball coverage team. Eamonn Brennan and Matt Mattucci are the beat reporters and Ryan Corazza is the columnist. Each is or has been sports editor at the IDS, and all have been covering sports for the IDS - and various professional publications - for four years.
Our goal with this blog is to bring you everything that we couldn't fit in a 600 word story. When we travel to games, we'll post everything we find interesting about the stadium. When Coach Sampson has an especially lively postgame press conference, we'll post a transcript. We'll update you from the Big Ten Tournament, the NCAA (or - gulp - NIT) tournament. We want to show up early and stay late, to cull all the tidbits from the circus that is D-1 athletics.
We pride ourselves on being the IU student's window into IU basketball with our newspaper and online editions. With this blog, hopefully we can make that window even wider.
We begin tonight, with a live diary of Hoosier Hysteria and a round-the-clock update on all things Eric Gordon Jr. With his father's announcement this morning - and the rumblings we keep hearing that Gordon will be at Assembly Hall tonight - we can only imagine the scene if Gordon makes it official tonight on Branch McCracken Court. Preserve your vocal chords, in other words.
We welcome your comments and e-mails (sports@idsnews.com), which will be a running policy for us. This isn't our forum; it's yours. Enjoy, and see you tonight at Assembly Hall.
