The Bloomington Police Department charged 23-year-old Jaymon Trey Gilreath with murder Friday after he allegedly shot 24-year-old Noah Slinkard on Thursday night, according to a BPD daily crime email.
Police responded to a shooting at 8:15 p.m. Thursday on the 1000 block of North Illinois Street and located Slinkard, who had a gunshot wound to his head, lying near the front door of an apartment according to a news release from BPD Capt. Ryan Pedigo.
At 8:23 p.m., police located and identified Gilreath, taking him into custody without incident, according to the release. Slinkard was transported to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital, but was declared dead at 9:49 p.m.
Several witnesses and other people present allegedly told police that Gilreath believed Slinkard was in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend. At the time of the shooting, Slinkard and another man were reportedly sitting on the front porch of a residence when Gilreath approached them on foot, according to the news release.
“The man that had been on the porch with the victim stated that he observed Gilreath pull a handgun from his waistline and then shoot the victim in the head before turning and walking away,” the news release stated.
Several people called emergency services and reported a suspect had walked away from the scene of the crime on West 13th Street. Officers located a handgun in a holster near a bench on the 1300 block of West 13th Street, which is next to Crestmont Park. The news release states it is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.
After police collected witness statements and interviewed Gilreath, he was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. He was arrested for murder, an unclassified felony in Indiana, at 12:28 a.m. Friday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Arrest Report. He was then transported to the Monroe County Jail, the news release stated.
