Indiana University placed the Sigma Nu fraternity on cease and desist Tuesday after alleged hazing, according to the IU Office of Student Life website.

Sigma Nu is the fifth fraternity IU placed on cease and desist this month. Beta Theta Pi and Pi Kappa Phi were also placed on cease and desist Sept. 25. Theta Chi and Delta Tau Delta were placed on cease and desist Sept. 16 and Sept. 17, respectively.

The IU Police Department reported that hazing with a substantial risk of bodily injury took place at Sigma Nu on Sept. 20, according to the IUPD Daily Crime and Fire Log.

“The investigation for Sigma Nu is ongoing,” IU spokesperson Mark Bode wrote an email to the Indiana Daily Student. “Cease and Desist directives are placed when there are allegations of behavior that have caused or may cause harm to the members of the organization and/or the community.”

IUPD Public Information Officer Julia Nowak wrote in an email to the IDS that the alleged hazing case was referred to university officials for review.

Organizations on cease and desist are prohibited by the university from hosting or attending social events, recruitment events, membership education activities or philanthropic events, Bode wrote.

Sigma Nu entered into a voluntary agreement with the university from Jan. 29 to Feb. 20, 2026, to resolve a matter regarding alcohol and risk management, according to the IU Office of Student Life website.

IU also suspended Sigma Nu in 2017 for alcohol violations and hazing. Suspension means a fraternity must stop all activities and disband, according to the IU Office of Student Life website. The fraternity was rechartered in April 2022.
