Indiana baseball head coach Jeff Mercer finalized his coaching staff for the 2027 season Tuesday, announcing the additions of assistant coaches Matt Morrow and Sean Mullen.
Both coaches arrive in Bloomington after serving in player development roles for other teams during the 2026 season.
Morrow was the Director of Offensive Development at the University of Kentucky.
“We are thrilled to have Matt join our staff. He was a great player at Wright State for me and has developed into an excellent young coach,” Mercer said in a press release.
Morrow joins the Hoosiers as an assistant coach focused on hitting and infield defense. He will work alongside Mercer and assistant coach Zach Weatherford on the offensive side while taking primary responsibility for Indiana's infielders. During games, Morrow will coach first base as well while Weatherford continues to handle third-base coaching duties.
Morrow, a four-year starter under Mercer at Wright State University, helped lead the Raiders to the 2018 NCAA Tournament before spending two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. His coaching career has included stops at the University of Illinois Chicago, Wabash Valley College, St. Louis University and Kentucky.
Mullen last worked as the Director of Pitching Development at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
He joins the program as an assistant coach working with Indiana's pitchers and catchers. Mullen will assist pitching coach Matt Myers with the day-to-day development of the pitching staff and bullpen while also helping oversee the Hoosiers' catchers.
A standout pitcher at UCLA, Mullen posted a 9-1 record with a 3.39 ERA during the 2021 season before being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round of the MLB Draft.
“We’re excited to have Sean join the program. He had a terrific playing career at UCLA as well as in the Tampa Bay organization,” Mercer said in a press release.
With the hiring of Mullen, Indiana looks to replace former assistant coach Denton Sagerman, who departed the program in June to join the Cleveland Guardians organization.
A former collegiate pitcher and aerospace engineer, Sagerman blended his engineering background with modern baseball technology to help develop Indiana's pitchers and catchers. Sagerman worked with Myers to utilize biomechanics software, force plates and high-speed video. Mullen now fills the opening on Mercer's staff after spending the 2026 season as Kentucky's Director of Offensive Development, bringing his own experience in player development and recruiting to Bloomington.
“He will assist our pitchers and lead our catchers. His experience with the NewtForce mound, biomechanic evaluations and training modifications will be invaluable to our staff,” Mercer said in a press release.
The additions complete Mercer's coaching staff heading into the 2027 season. After losing several of its top hitters from last season to the transfer portal and three pitchers to the MLB Draft, the recent hires indicate Mercer’s commitment to remaining grounded in his player-development philosophy as he continues to build the Hoosiers from the bottom up.
