Democrat Beau Bayh beat out Blythe Potter for the Democratic candidacy for Indiana Secretary of State in the Democratic Party’s statewide convention Saturday. He will run in the November midterm election.

Bayh wrote on his website he values serving the public over political parties as an elected official.

His father, Evan Bayh, was Indiana’s 46th governor and served from 1989 until 1997. He also served as a U.S. senator and Indiana’s Secretary of State. His grandfather, Birch Bayh, served three terms as a U.S. senator and authored Title IX and two constitutional amendments.

Beau Bayh served as captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, including on top secret intelligence missions. He was honorably discharged in 2023.

He earned an undergraduate degree in government from Harvard University and later attended Harvard Law School.

He currently works as a commercial law attorney in Indianapolis at MacGill Law.

Bayh wrote on his website he would take lessons he learned as a Marine on how to address problems and apply them to the role of Secretary of State.

His website wrote he supports referendums that allow voters to weigh in on statewide issues like redistricting and wants to improve Indiana’s voter participation turnout.

The Indiana Secretary of State is the state’s chief election official, making the secretary responsible for overseeing state elections, managing voter registration initiatives and maintaining state records. The office also helps charter new businesses and regulates the securities industry.

The general election will take place Nov. 3.
