Democrat Brad Meyer will face incumbent Republican Erin Houchin and independent Floyd Taylor in the November midterm election after District 9’s Democratic primary Tuesday, the Associated Press called just after midnight Wednesday.
Meyer held 37.8% of the vote with 95% of ballots in on Tuesday evening. He defeated Keil Roark, Jim Graham and Tim Peck, who won the district’s Democratic primary in 2024.
District 9 encompasses Monroe County and much of southeastern Indiana and is currently represented by Houchin.
Meyer grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and spent over two decades in local manufacturing after attending Purdue. Meyer, who has not held a public office before, quit his job as a Navy civilian engineer to enter the race.
He describes himself as a progressive Democrat, and his main goals include universal nonprofit healthcare and raising the national minimum wage to $20 an hour. He also wants to expand overtime protection for salaried workers earning under $100,000 a year and shift federal support away from large corporate farms and towards independent small rural family farms.
Meyer also intends to end tariffs and invest in colleges and trade programs to help workers enter higher wage industries.
The general election will take place Nov. 3.
