This week is full of things to celebrate, whether it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the College Football Playoff National Championship or even just completing your first week of classes. No matter what it is, there is plenty of live music in Bloomington.
Monday
The Monroe County Public Library will host multiple events for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. From 10:30-11:15 a.m. the downtown branch will host the Bloomington Peace Choir to perform songs of peace in honor of King. Other events include a performance from the IU African American Dance Company, an opportunity to make a 3D peace dove and a volunteer opportunity, which can all be found on the MCPL’s events schedule.
The Bluebird will host a National Championship watch party with IU student band Opal. Doors for the event will open at 3 p.m., and the classic rock cover band will play from 4-6 p.m. The Indiana football game against the University of Miami will begin at 7:30 p.m. and be shown at The Bluebird. Tickets for the 21-and-up event will cost $12.43.
Tuesday
Hsuan Chang Kitano and Jonathan Oddie will have a historical keyboards faculty recital at Ford-Crawford Hall. Kitano is a lecturer in fortepiano and harpsichord, which are both historic keyboard instruments, at the Jacobs School of Music. Oddie is a professor in historical performance at the Jacobs School of Music. Their recital will be free and is from 7-8 p.m.
Friday
Rod Tuffcurls & The Bench Press will play at The Bluebird starting at 9 p.m. Tickets for the 21-and-up show will cost $18.65. The Chicago-based group typically plays pop or rock music.
The IU Auditorium will have a special one-night-only performance of the musical “Chicago" at 7 p.m. Tickets for the musical will cost from $23 to $104 depending on seating at the auditorium. One of Broadway’s longest-running musicals, “Chicago” includes song and dance throughout the show.
Saturday
Back 2 Mac, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band created in 2010, will perform at The Bluebird. The show will begin at 9 p.m., and tickets at the 21-and-up venue will cost $18.65.
