Welcome to Ask Ainsley: an advice column built by and for students

Editor's note: All opinions, columns and letters reflect the views of the individual writer and not necessarily those of the IDS or its staffers.

As an (almost) teacher, I get asked a lot of questions when I’m in the classroom. Some are obvious: ‘Miss Ainsley, when’s recess?’ (It’s on the board). Some are philosophical: ‘Miss Ainsley, are you a real adult?’ (Maybe?) And some are just plain weird: ‘Miss Ainsley, whose shoe is this?’ (Clearly not mine or yours, kid).

All things considered, you might call me an expert on questions. But what makes me qualified to answer yours, you might ask? After all, you shouldn't take advice from just anyone. What you should know is that I’m a senior, so I’ve been around here long enough to know my way around. If you’re not convinced, I also have 18 years of experience as an oldest sister, so that pretty much makes me an expert on everything. I don’t have all the answers (who does?), but I do have stories, wit and just enough perspective to help you laugh while you figure things out.

That’s what this column is really about. College can be messy; it’s half thrilling, half terrifying, and occasionally both at once. Sometimes you need practical advice, like how to survive group projects without losing your sanity. Other times you just need reassurance that you’re not the only one who’s confused, exhausted or eating cereal for dinner for the third night in a row. My job here is to help you navigate all of that with a little humor, a little honesty, and hopefully a little wisdom too.

But it’s no advice column without you! Every good one needs two things: questions worth asking, and answers worth acting on. You bring the former, and I will bring the latter.

So, if you're anything like me and also not sure if you’re a “real” adult yet, ask away!

To submit a question or tell me what’s on your mind, fill out the google form here, or email me at askainsleyatiu@gmail.com. I’m only an ask away!

Ainsley Foster is a senior studying elementary education and children’s mental health.
